    “That was pretty, Mama B.”

    “Thank you Angie.”

“When did you guys learn that?”

“It was a present for you, T.”

Later, the weary and thirsty, but still buoyant, carolers happily sipped Kit’s hot chocolate and munched on her cookies.

Bette had joined her friends and Sonny as they circled Kit’s piano.  The older woman had been playing holiday songs requested by the customers, but the requests had petered out and she now played a soft medley of her favorites.

    “Sing us the song, Bette?”

    “What song, Alice?”

“The one that got you in so much trouble.”

    “Kit told you?”

    “The whole story.”

“It was a carol, not a song.  That is an important part of the story, don’t you think, Alice?”

“Right.  Carol.  Kit said you sang it beautifully.”

    “It’s been 25 years.  I don’t remember it.”

“Bette Porter forget something?  I don’t think so.”

“I’ll play the tune, Bette.  Maybe it’ll come to you,” Kit suggested.

Bette shook her head but she didn’t leave, which Kit and everyone else interpreted as a “maybe.”

Tina had been circling the room, greeting familiar faces and chatting with new ones.  She smiled broadly as she approached this particular table.

“You have a beautiful voice, Jeremy,” she told the young choir boy.

“Thank you,” he politely replied having heard the praise repeatedly that night and often before.

“Will you be singing during the holidays?”

He nodded, “Yes.  The school gives many concerts.  I missed practice to come tonight.”

“Oh,” Tina glanced at Ed, who quickly looked away, confirming Bette’s suspicion.

“Where do you go to school?”

    “St. Thomas Choir School.”

“That’s impressive!  It’s in New York, isn’t it?” Tina spoke to the boy but looked accusing at Ed, who hung his head at being caught.

Tina turned her attention to the other boy, “Did you have a good time singing, Lucas?”

    He nodded.

“You are a very good sleigh bell ringer.”

The child beamed, but Ed didn’t notice.  His attention had been drawn to the faint tune Kit was playing.
