Bette was torn between getting seriously angry with Alice and letting her in on the secret. She decided upon her latter option and got down on her knees in front of Alice.
“Al…. you have to go because I need time to give Tina the ring…. I won’t do that with you here…”
“The ring?” Alice said with a baffled look.
Bette pulled the box out of her front pocket. “Yes, the ring, Alice…. the rings were finally finished this afternoon… that’s where I went…”
“Well… damn, Porter… put that ring away… Tina could come in at any minute…” Alice nervously exclaimed.
“She might think you’re proposing to me…. from the position you’re in right now….”
Bette got up from the floor laughing, “somehow I doubt Tina would think that…”
“Stranger things have happened….” Alice said and got up as well, “you could just have said so, Bette… we’ll clear out….”
“Thanks, Al…”
“Geez… good luck, Bette… call me tomorrow… I wanna know what she said…”
“She already said yes, Alice…”
“Always the confident Bette Porter…. that’s what I like!” Alice said before she shouted goodbye to Tina and left with Dana right behind her.
It had sounded like Tina’s voice came from the new room of the house. Bette went to the kitchen and picked up a chilled bottle of champagne and two glasses before she went to find Tina.
“T?” Bette called out.
“I’m in here…” Tina shouted back from further down the hall.
Tina was sitting on the floor in the empty room. With her back against the wall, she relaxed her aching limbs while taking in the new addition to the house.
“Are you okay?” Bette asked from the door.
“Yes…. come here, babe… come sit with me…” Tina smiled and waved Bette closer. She scooted forward to make room for Bette to sit behind her.
“You brought champagne?” Tina asked.
“We have something to celebrate….” Bette smiled and sat down behind Tina, who cuddled up close to Bette.
“So you managed to get Alice out the door….” Tina chuckled while Bette uncorked the wine and filled their glasses.
“It took some work but yes… I managed to get her out…”
“She worked her socks off today…. She did good, Bette…”
“I know….” Bette smiled tucking lightly on Tina’s hair. Tina turned and smiled at Bette.
“I love you…” Tina said before placing a lingering kiss on Bette’s lips.
“And how do you feel about our new house….?” Bette asked stealing another kiss.
“I feel great actually… this feels right, baby…” Tina said in a quiet voice, looking around the room.
Bette pulled Tina even closer, burying her face at Tina’s shoulder.
“How do you feel, Bette…?” Tina asked while reaching behind herself to run her hand over Bette’s hair.
“I feel… I feel like this is the end and the beginning all at once….” Bette whispered.
“… how’s that, baby…?” Tina asked, knowing very well what Bette meant but still needing her to say it out loud.
“The end of a long time of horrible regret and loneliness followed by a time of hope and renewed love… the repentance and solitude is over… and the hope and love… well, that we bring with us into this new beginning….”
“So let’s drink to that… to the end and the beginning…” Tina said and picked up the glasses from the floor. She turned around to face Bette.
“Yes, let’s drink to that…” Bette concurred and raised her glass to Tina.
They drank looking at each other over the rim of their glass.
“I have something for you…. for us…” Bette whispered suddenly feeling a little apprehensive.
“For us?” Tina asked with smile in her eyes.
“Yes… for us….”
“Okay…?”
Bette struggled to get box out of her front pocket. The jeans were snug and the position she was in didn’t allow her to access the rings.
“I have it right here…” Bette said desperately trying to free the rings.
Tina laughed softly at the sight of Bette wiggling. She took the glass from Bette’s hand and scooted back to let Bette have some room.
“There it is…” Bette grinned proudly, “now come back here…”
“What’s in your hand, baby?” Tina giggled as she placed her legs over Bette’s.
Bette’s dark eyes sparkled in the dimly lit room, letting Tina know of her excitement.
“What?” Tina laughed.
“Give me your hand…”
Tina placed her hand in Bette’s.
“Do you still want to marry me?” Bette asked while holding Tina’s hand.
“Yes, of course I do….”
“Then you should wear my ring….”
“Bette….”
“T… I picked up our rings today…. can I?” Bette asked with Tina’s ring between two fingers.
“Yes… please…” Tina said, sensing her eyes glazing over.
Bette slipped the ring on Tina finger. “It fits….” Bette breathed like she was witnessing a magic trick.
Tina looked down at her hand with tears falling down her cheeks. Bette’s eyes searched her face for a smile behind the tears.
“… I love it, baby…. yes, it fits…” Tina said half laughing half crying. Bette placed the box in Tina’s hand.
“Now the rest is up to you, T….” she smiled.
Tina mimicked Bette’s movements and held up her ring. “Do you still want to marry me…?” she asked.
Bette laughed, “Yes, that goes without saying…”
“That sort of thing never goes without saying…”
“No… I guess it doesn’t…” Bette whispered.
“Then can I?” Tina asked and raised her hand for Bette to take.
Yes, baby… please…” Bette said, feeling the emotions rise to the surface.
With fingers entwined and hearts pounding in their chests Bette and Tina shared a slow deep kiss full of promise. They whispered words of love as they left the champagne and the empty room to make their way to the bedroom.

Happy Happy Joy Joy! I’ll have to go tracking you down more often if we’re going to be treated to chapters as fantastic as this! B & T have addressed their fears, and neither of them are unrealistically expecting completely smooth sailing. And they’ve gotten the rings now… they know what’s at stake, and what they want, and I don’t think they’ll risk losing each other in such a spectacularly painful way again. Even if this chapter didn’t come to you as quickly as a cheetah on an oily chute, you did it perfectly, anker. Thank you for the post!
Oh BTW….thanks for not blaming me for being late, I had expected that LOL. And of course I rememeber our deal…how could I forget, not a chance :o))

This flowed nicely. Poor Bette having to get down on her knees to beg Alice to leave so that she could give the ring to Tina was a hot. I can understand the overwhelming fear for both Bette and Tina. Is it going to work this time and can they really live without their soulmate if it does not? I believe that the answer is for them to always try and communicate and don’t give up even when times are difficult.
Glad to see you have posted another chapter. I missed your story. The exchanging of the rings was so romantic!

Hey anker, Girl you are so bad! I loved this latest chapter. You are true the characters and the interactions between them. There was just so much love between Bette and Tina balanced with their uncertainity of what the best course of action is. You neven know that the decision you have made is the right one until after the event. Hindsight is marvelous but this is a time to take that leap of faith.
