Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides

“Hmm …. either way, even if you adjust your targets, it could mean you may need to find a fund manager who could do that full-time, Bette,” Tina answered. “You can’t do it all.” She paused before continuing, “By the way, I didn’t see Jackson tonight.”

Bette frowned a little, and responded, “Yeah. Jackson told me he experienced a flashback yesterday to what happened at Peter’s estate years ago.  So I told him he ought to feel free to stay home tonight. I think he still has nightmares sometimes.”

“Dan not able to help?” Tina asked, concerned, and looked up at Bette.

Bette pursed her lips, “I think he needs to consider taking a long break, go to a facility, maybe, and deal with this conclusively. Jackson’s like a bulldog, though. Not able to leave my side.”

    They fell quiet.

“Maybe I should talk to him?’ Tina offered.

That could work. Maybe if Jackson heard things from another perspective, he’d relent.

    “Hmm… why not, T?”

“I’ll take him for a walk around Central Park this weekend, maybe. And we could start by reminiscing about what happened all those years ago in Peter’s estate?” Tina thought aloud, after thinking through several possible opening subjects.

Fifteen years earlier, after the last scene of Chapter XXVIII

Jackson sprinted around one corner of the main house just as ambulances roared to a stop twenty feet from the rounded arc of the driveway.  They couldn’t come any closer because of the bodies scattered haphazardly a few feet from the front door.

The scene was chaotic and there was blood everywhere .   Logan and George were waving frantically to the emergency techs who’d leapt out of the ambulances, pointing towards those they thought needed urgent attention.

The techs fanned out, carefully examining bodies, moving quickly towards those who looked the most bloodied.  One of the techs knelt next to a prone Brom, who was clutching his chest, and who’d been crawling towards the pile of his friends even after he’d been struck by a bullet in his chest.

In the midst of the confusion, Jackson grew increasingly panicked and in the back of his mind he wondered why the shooting had stopped.  An idea cut across his panicked thoughts.  Miller?

He quickly checked his phone, and saw a text from Miller.  “Took out the shooter. I called for the ambulances earlier when this all started. Still scanning the perimeter just in case…”

The first one pulled out of a small pile where bodies were concentrated around was Jules, whose clothes and body were covered in blood.  She was gently laid out on the ground and then an emergency tech knelt by her side to check her.

    1. Adrenaline in this story, my God was a reading breathtaking,
My heart sank as I thought Diana would succumbed to death
but fortunately she sobreviveu.Tenho also say that the beginning of
story 15 years later was Great! and then coming back to event
the shooting, phew !! was a sensational chapter.
And congratulations, you wrote this scene NC: 17 Tina and Bette with a
      mastery.
      All Stars.

    2. 10 stars! !!!

Amazing beginning with the look in the future, but you or rather Tina mentioned only Angelica, where is the other child of them? ! Maybe i am too fast and will you get into that in the next chapter.

What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.

Skydancer, you are a absolute brilliant writer! Thanks for sharing it.

    3. Fantastic to have another post on this story!

Thank you for the look at the future to lessen our worry on the immediate storyline!

      Impatiently waiting for Chapter 30!

    4. Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.

      • You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.

    5. Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
