Bitter Endings, Sweet Beginnings: Part Five

If there was one thing that Alice prided herself on it was the ability
to read people and their moods. That being so, she was able to read
that Helena was currently in a foul temperament. Something that
occurred the moment Gabby appeared. Though she knew she shouldn’t be,
she found herself enamored with the way that Helena smoothly and so
effortlessly dealt with Gabby. It was something that Dana had never
been able to do, even throughout their many years of friendship as she
observed how the screenwriter treated Alice. She was kind and she was
sweet and she tried over and over to get Alice to not go back to her
but not once did she do as Helena and actually stand up to say Alice
    wasn’t going anywhere with Gabby.

In all honesty it was probably because Dana was far too timid and
gentle a person to make such a possessive and forceful remark and while
Alice did love that about the tennis player she still found herself
enamored with Helena’s reaction. There was just something about seeing
a person fighting on her behalf, even verbally, that charmed Alice
    endlessly.

Remaining thoroughly charmed and wanting to help pull Helena out of her
foul mood, Alice pushed back her chair and rose to her feet. When the
heiress looked at her, entirely perplexed, Alice grinned and held out
her hand as she said, “Dance with me.”

A slow smile forming in response, Helena recalled that first dance in
her old bedroom and placed her hand in Alice’s, allowing the blonde to
pull her to her feet. Alice squeezed her hand then turned around to
weave them through the crowd of women and towards the dance floor.

They soon found themselves lost in the music and the dance, bodies
touching but not really, moving painfully close then far away again.
Dancing for what seemed an endless period of time. And then they were
once again graced with the voice of DJ Sera floating over them as she
said, “Time for the spotlight dance, ladies and gents. A romantic song
for slow dancing.” Sera chuckled almost evilly and drawled, “Romantic
    by my standards anyway.”

“Want to go get drinks?” asked Alice, moving close to speak in Helena’s
ear as the music began playing. She didn’t recognize the song but it
did have an appropriate rhythmic beat to it that made it suitable for
    slow dancing.
