Before I fall in love (5/10) – a Bette and Helena story

Helena piped. “I miss stage performances. I used to be very involved in the Drama Society during my high school days. We even went to Yale University for a musical called Tristan and Isolde where I was the female-lead.”

“You participated in Tristan and Isolde in 1983? I was the costume director for that production!” Bette exclaimed incredulously, amazed at how small the world actually was.

“Don’t tell me you were the hot-headed lass with the oversized sweat-shirt and skintight pants? I thought that outfit was ghastly!” Helena replied, equally shocked at Bette’s admission.

“That had been the rage then, I think it was much better than your nerdy glasses and British frock!” Bette retorted defensively, aware that the actresses who came all the way from the United Kingdom had been high-school students.

“Duh I was 14 then! Matters of appearance didn’t matter as much to young teenagers during that time!” Helena replied in mock disdain.

Bette softened, and asked seriously. “Well, I had to admit that you were good. Why didn’t you pursue a career in drama?”

“My mother wanted me to take a management course so that I can take over the running of the Peabody Foundation.” Helena said quietly. She looked into Bette’s intense eyes. “Not that I have very much choice in that matter.” She tensed up as she recollected the numerous arguments with her parent regarding her career choices, gripping her hands into fists as she closed her eyes.

“Come here”, Bette reached over to give Helena a hug. “I understand how you feel. A job that doesn’t make my heart sing makes me want to kill myself.”

Helena put her arms around her buddy and hesitated. Bette leaned forward and squeezed her tightly. Their bodies relaxed and molded to each other as a warm tingling coursed throughout their bodies. Bette sighed contentedly and snuggled closer. After what seemed like eternity, Bette finally broke the hug as she gently led Helena into the theatre premises. As the ladies continued to share about their lives, they had a good laugh about the hilarious events that took place during in their youth. Slowly, they strengthened the chord they had shared with each other.

The day had come to an end. The gang was sitting around in the hotel room, sharing in a beer in front of the TV when a loud singing voice floated from the bathroom.

“When I fall in love, it will beeeeeeeeeeee forever…”

Bette is evidently in a good mood, thought Shane, as she raised an eyebrow at Alice, slouched on a bed across her. This was a side of Bette that nobody knew about.

    There was a pause.

Suddenly, the room was deadly silent as everyone looked at each other in confusion.

“When I fall in love, it will beeeeeeeeeee forever…” the crooning continued at a higher note.

Perhaps this was a side of Bette that nobody wanted to know about, as everyone in the room sighed in unison.
