In not justifying the affair, the therapist tried to make Bette see that she was holding onto all of the guilt, and the pain and the anger surrounding it. In doing that, she wouldn’t be able to forgive herself, or Tina for the events leading up to the affair. Yes, It was Bette’s fault solely for allowing the encounters with the “Carpenter” to happen, but the circumstances leading up to that were hers and Tina’s to be responsible for. As were the events after the affair came to be known.
How do I admit to Tina how weak I truly was at that point? How out of my control everything felt? How worthless I felt when I couldn’t stop myself from being like my Father? So Pius and judgmental only to fall harder to the ground from the pedestal I thought I was on.
Bette sat back in her seat with her eyes closed, and thought of all these things as she flew across the country back to her family. She was afraid to be coming back and facing Tina , especially as all her guilt had restated itself at the forefront of her heart and mind. She wanted this life with Tina and Angelica more than she had ever wanted anything, but it was hard for her to accept that she deserved that life.
When she deplaned and came through the gate it was 3am. in L.A. She went to get her luggage, and then went in search of Kit. As she came through the passenger doors, Tina was there with a sleeping Angelica in her arms. Bette stood completely motionless, except for the tears that fell in a steady tide down her cheeks.
“Hi Baby.” Tina said as she wiped them away tenderly with her free hand.
“H..Hi” Bette managed. “What are you doing here? Where is Kit?”
“I called Kit, after I talked to you earlier. I felt your…sadness when you called, and I thought maybe you needed us.” Tina explained.
Bette was raw with the emotions she was feeling at that moment. Everything accumulated and burst forth as she engulfed her lover and best friend, along with their daughter in their arms. Bette sobbed her love into Tina’s neck as she hugged her and, held on to her for dear life. Afraid to ever let go again.
