    Temporal days

    Spencer stood staring at her, silently begging her to say something. She finally turned away, lowering the suitcase to the floor. Spencer reached for Ashley’s hand, uncurling her wife’s fist. She pressed her palm to Ashley’s before closing her wife’s fingers again. Opening the front door, Spencer looked at Ashley one more time silently begging her to stop this. Chest constricting, Ashley watched as her wife’s face crumbled. Walking out, Spencer closed the door softly behind her. The doorframe dug painfully into Ashley’s back as her body slid down, collapsing heavily onto the floor. She opened her hand, staring at the small golden circle. Her mouth suddenly able to form words, Ashley screamed.

    I know life is uncertain
    Things don’t turn out like we plan
    And I want to do something
    I’m not sure if I can

    Ashley felt her body move as someone ran past her pushing her against the table. Pressing her head back against her wife’s neck, Ashley sniffed deeply letting Spencer’s scent surround her. I’ll do whatever you want. I’m sorry for everything I’ve done. Please, don’t do this…please don’t take her away. I can’t…wasn’t one enough? Pulling her wife’s limp arm around her neck, Ashley burrowed against her warm body, “Please baby, please Spence, I need you so much, you can’t leave me here…I’ll die without you.”

    “Good morning.” Spencer shrugged, pouring herself a cup of coffee, “If you say so.” She sat down at the table across from her mother, taking a small careful sip. Paula examined her daughter closely taking note of the black circles under her eyes, the looseness of her clothes, the pale band of skin around her empty ring finger, “How did you sleep last night?” Rubbing her eyes tiredly, Spencer responded, “Not so good…I’m not used to sleeping al…Look I spoke with Dad, I’m gonna take some time off from the center.” Paula walked over to the sink, her back to her daughter. She started to wash her cup, “Honey, you’ve been here for almost two weeks now…you know Ben and I welcome you to stay as long as you need to, but we just want to know that you’re okay.” Spencer stared at her mother, her eyes focused on the flowery pattern of her scrubs.
