“T, you don’t understand! Sometimes I get really…shit…things are going so good with everything. The business, our relationship, even Paula…this never happens for me. I’m scared…I couldn’t handle loosing Spence. Every morning when I wake up, I feel this pressure like something bad is gonna happen, something I can’t control. I get nervous when she goes to the freaking grocery store. I just want her to be safe and I know that I can’t always be there…sometimes I have to let her go.”
“So, what you’re tempting fate, now? Bad shit happens all the time. You think all those starving people in India did somebody wrong in their lives? I think that all of this is a bigger role of the dice then any of us want to admit. Yeah, I like to think that there’s this guy up there nudging me along, keeping me out of the way of speeding buses and all, but sometimes I feel like he’s up there giving people life wedgies.”
Ashley couldn’t help laughing, “Life wedgies?”
Tristan belched in response, “Shut up Davies, I’m in the sweet spot! You love Spence and she loves you. That’s it. That’s all you can worry about, making sure that she knows that every day because in the end you’re right…you really can’t protect her, nobody can.”
“You’re not making me feel any better.”
“I’m not here to make you feel better. I’m here to make sure you don’t do anything too stupid.” Tristan picked up Ashley’s beer, finishing it before digging into her steak again.
“Now, eat up! We have a lot of work to do and only three days to do it.”
Arching her eyebrows, Ashley stared at her friend, “Three days?”
“Yeah, I promised Sammie I’d spend next week with her, so Spence needs to be back here in the next seventy-two hours.”
Sighing, Ashley chewed slowly, “She’s staying with her mom. I’ll go over there today. Hell, I’ll be lucky if she even talks to me right now.”
“No, I told you we have work to do first.”
“What in the hell are you talking about?”
“While you were scrubbing yourself, I took the liberty of looking around a bit. I think your office would be perfect, lots of natural light. Why the hell do you have an office at home anyway? Every time I go by your real office you and Glen are playing on that stupid fake putting green.”
Ashley rolled her eyes, “First of all, we’re not playing…we’re doing client research and second what are you freaking talking about?! What’s my office perfect for?”
“A nursery.” Tristan held up her hand instantly silencing her friend’s loud grumbling, “Shut up Davies, I don’t want to hear it! Spence needs to see that you really want this baby. It’s not open for discussion. Now finish your goddamn steak so we can go shopping! Her eyes twinkling, Tristan continued, “I’m thinking green and blue…you know Irish baby and all.”
