Taking the Long Way – (Chapter: 4: Back to California)

“It is wonderful to have you back Spencer.” she says hugging me close. “You must be exhausted so I will let you get to bed. I aired out the studio and set some new sheets on your bed.”

“Thank you so much Grams. You are too good to me. I promise to come over tomorrow and give you the scoop on the summer.”

    “Okay, Sweetheart. Sleep tight”

    “Night Grams.”

“Oh, Spencer.” she called back. “I just wanted to let you know that Kaylen was here around 7 tonight. She is excited to see you.”

I grabbed an overnight bag with out of my truck and headed to the studio. I called my parents to let them know I was there safe, got things settled for the night and sent a text to Kaylen.

[Hey Hooker! ;) Im here. Srry I missed you. Lets mt tmrow on campus].

Kaylen was my best friend here at college. I was excited to see her and catch up. We were both in the pre-vet program, so we do a lot of studying together. We work great at keeping each other focused on school and not so much on girls…well in her case boys.

I heard my phone beep as I was brushing my teeth. I washed my face and flopped on my bed to read her text.

[What evr u r more of a hooker than me!! See you at the campus clinic around 3? Cant wait 2 c u!!] Kaylen sent back.   Perfect I thought.  That will give me time to get unpacked.

I think I was asleep before my head the pillow.

Beautiful California sun rays greeted me when I woke up Friday morning. I opened the sliding glass door to the large patio that connected my studio to my gram’s house. I breathed in deep the smell of the Oak trees that surrounded her property. I love early California mornings like this.

“Morning sweetie,” my grams said. She was watering her flowers and small trees. “You want to come over for breakfast and catch up?”

    “For sure!” I said stretching.

Grams and I chatted about my summer at the ranch. How mom and dad were working too hard and that they needed a good vacation. My grandma thought that they go visit my Uncle Donnie and Anti Gwen, who lived in Hawaii. My mom hasn’t seen her brother in years and I though that was a great idea. I told her that I would work on them to take some time off from the ranch.  I mentioned that I wouldn‘t be surprised if Glen and Madison got married.  She was excited to hear the relationship details. Glen reminded her so much of Grandpa I think that she had a special place in heart for him.  Not that she played favorites at all, Glen and she just had a wonderful connection. I asked her what she had been doing all summer. She shared details of the trip she and her neighbor, Mrs. Davies or Ellen to my grandma, took to Lake Tahoe and how she was kicking butt at her pinochle night with the ladies. She also went rafting down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. She amazes me with all the adventurous things she does. If I can become half the woman she is I will have accomplished something extraordinary.

    1. definatly not bad. I still am wondering how ur gonna throw Ashley into all this. I remember I messed up by bringing her in to the story using only a couple paragraphs. That was my 1st book, so don’t make my mistakes. Use a whole cha[ter to introduce them. PMS!
