Taking the Long Way – (Chapter: 1: Dreaming in Color)

The dream I am having is vivid and very much in color.

Some people say they don’t dream in color.  I always do.  Some of my dreams tend to have premonitions…it kind of freaks me out.  I usually fall asleep praying that my dreams will be meaningless or random.  It would be even better if they were not in color.  All of those horrific colors that make the dream reality.  They bring back the scenes of chaos in a rush that always jars me awake soaked in sweat but shaking with a cold panic.  I am not a fan of dreams most of the time.

However, this particular dream is different.  I am intrigued.  I actually don’t want it to stop.  For good reason as my hands are buried deep in soft auburn curls. They feel like corn silk sifting through my fingers as I run them out of her hair, over perfect tan shoulders and down her back.  She responds with a slight shiver and steps in closer to me as I interlock my fingers at the small of her back.  We are standing on a beach that is inset into a cove.  The moon is so bright and full that the ocean waves glint silver and a translucent jade green as they curl toward the sand.  I swear that I can feel the wind blowing surf spray on my face.  I start to panic a bit. Who is this girl?  What are we doing? I want to wake up…the colors, the sensations they are too real.  Things that are too real in dreams don’t bode well for me.  A soft sigh from the girl in my arms pulls my mind fully back to the dream with out a second thought.

I am weak.  I bring my hand to her chin and guide her face up to meet my eyes.  A beautiful smile greets them.  I feel the “real” me loose breath, my heart rate plummets only to jump to double speed ½ second later.  I have NO idea who this girl is, but she is beyond words.  The ‘dream’ me smiles back at her with recognition…and love?  What the Hell!?!  Love?

I am desperately searching my subconscious for a name to associate with this lovely face.  I get nothing.  I have to find out more.  I sink completely back into the dream as my eyes drift from her lips to her eyes.  Her eyes….I am falling into them.  They are such a dark shade of brown I can barely distinguish her iris before it turns to pupil.  My hand is cupping the side of her face while my thumb does lazy circles around her cheekbone.  I can tell she likes it because she closes her eyes and leans her head into my hand.

“Can I ask you something?” I say shyly.

"Of course, anything.” She replies.  Her voice brings no recognition to the ‘real’ me.  I am getting impatient.

“Okay, good.  So uhm Ahh…” I stutter nervously.  Her name is hanging on my lips and I want to shake my own shoulders to spill it.

“Cat got you tongue?” she teases.

“No!” I breathe out. “Ash, will you…”

At that very moment bright lights flood the dream and it dissipates instantaneously as something lands on me…..TBC
