Le Marais – (Chapter: For what it’s worth)

The brunette chewed her lip while she thought and Spencer found her eyes drawn there, mesmerized by the movement. Then the un-named stranger turned to her suddenly and caught her eye. Spencer blushed and averted her gaze, embarrassed to have been caught.

Then the sound came. It was too late to move. The unmistakable crunch of boots on the rough gravel strewn across the path. More than one set of feet too. The three of them looked at each other, panic in everyone’s eyes.

The strange girl ducked behind a barrel, but there was no where for Jean-Luc and Spencer to hide. If they moved away from the shadow of the hut they’d be seen immediately, and if they stayed, they’d be seen within seconds. There was nowhere to hide, and Spencer’s heart sped up because she knew who was coming. Those boots making the crunch, they were as familiar as the veins on the back of her hand.

Instinctively she grabbed Jean-Luc by the front of his vest and hauled him in close. She wound one arm around his neck and grasped the buttons on his shirt with the other. Then she pulled him down into a fierce kiss.

He tasted like cigarettes and the faintest hint of brandy. His mouth was rough, chapped lips and teeth. After his initial surprise he softened, opening his mouth and kissing her back. It wasn’t the most enjoyable experience of Spencer’s life, but at least he didn’t thrust his tongue down her throat like so many boys.

“Who’s there?” A voice cut through the dark light a knife and was accompanied by the sharp clicking of gun’s coming to ready. “Step out.”

A light shone in, a torch, blinding Spencer and Jean-Luc to their captors and making them blink. Like deer in the headlights they stood, Spencer with one hand grasping her companions shirt front and the other arm still around his neck. She was pressed up against his hard, lean frame and for anyone looking at them, there was no mistaking what the two of them had been doing.

    Spencer, to her surprise, giggled.

The voice stuttered again, “Who are you.” It was heavily accented in German. The torch swung away a little, to their bodies, and in the gleam of its reflection Spencer could see the little eagles shining on epaulets. Gestapo. Shit.
