Le Marais – (Chapter: For what it’s worth)

They were heading back towards town and Spencer was walking about three metres in front of them. Occasionally she could hear fierce whispering in front of them, but every time she chanced a look, Jean-Luc was gazing at her with slit like eyes and his gun trained on her back. Even if she managed to make a run for it, she’d be dead within a few steps. So she trudged on.

    Who were these people?

“Arrete,” Jean-Luc’s harsh voice rang out just loud enough for Spencer to hear. She stopped as ordered,

    They caught up with her.

“We can’t take her back there!” Jean-Luc said,

“She’ll know what to do!” the brunette argued.

“I know what to do!” Jean-Luc countered, “Merde, you know what I should do too,”

“Don’t be ridiculous, you can’t shoot her.” The curly haired brunette bit her lip, thinking.

“Look, I have no idea who you are or what you’re doing, I also don’t particularly care.” Spencer said cautiously, “But if you just let me go home I can also forget I never met you.”

Both her companions gave her a look.

They were standing at a crossroads not far from Annecy. The pretty French mountain town was silent and dark in the night. Normally there would be candles, there would be some lights shining in the town, but for the last four years, darkness had reigned.

Spencer looked sad. She missed her town, she missed the way it used to be. She missed being able to run up and down the canal, or shoot down to the boulangerie for a brioche. Instead they were hemmed in, ostensibly by their own government, but it was a sham. The whole thing was a sham.

“We have to get off this damn road,” the brunette grumbled.

She pulled Spencer over to the side of the road where a small shack lay haphazardly in the long grass. It looked well past use, and probably once held tools of some kind. Or it was a fishing storage space for the lake. Either-way, it was dilapidated and locked. Jean-Luc looked uncomfortable in himself. It dawned on Spencer that he was not the boss here, he was the one being ordered around. If he’d been in charge, Spencer had no doubt that she’d be dead by now, weighted down in the lake with a bullet in her head. Instead they were standing here, Spencer on edge and Jean-Luc looking like he wanted a cigarette.
