Le Marais – (Chapter: For what it’s worth)

Ashley could not take her eyes off Spencer. She sat on one side of the bed, gripping the pale hand in her own, and blinked rhythmically, slowly. Paula and Arthur were in and out of the room, calling Spencer’s brothers, and other family, making enquiries and sorting things out.

Ashley left once, to call Gray. Then she came back, sat down again and hadn’t moved. She wanted to talk to Spencer, to speak until it shook the blonde out of her coma and into reality.

That’s what it was, apparently, a coma. Or so Paula said. Ashley wasn’t really hearing anything any more except the insistent beeping of Spencer’s machine and the buzz in her own head. At first the beeping had irritated her, until she’d realized that it was Spencer’s heart beat. After that the sound was her friend, and a life line to which she clung.

She almost jumped when she felt a hand on her shoulder. It was Arthur, handing her a cup of coffee.

“White with two,” he said. Ashley smiled weakly and took it with a thanks. Arthur sat in the chair on the other side of the bed and stretched his legs out. “It’s probably a good thing she’s unconscious,” he gave a small smile, “she’s insufferable when she’s sick.”

“Really?” Ashley asked. Spencer had never been unwell when they’d been together. Not so much as a cold or virus.

“Oh yeah, she’s a big baby. Just wants to be fussed over and looked after. She hates being sick and she’s miserable the whole time.” He glanced over his daughter’s bruised face softly. “She’s going to be mighty pissed off when she wakes up and finds out she can’t go home straight away.”

“Yeah,” Ashley said. “I’ll be happy to fuss over her,” she added.

“Aaah, you’ll probably be fighting her mother and both her brothers for the privilege.” Arthur cocked his head to the side. “Even Glen looks after her when she’s sick.”

“She is the baby,” Ashley said. In her own head the choked out words echoed, ‘my baby.’

They both looked up as shoes skidded through the door and an out of breath Gray came into the room. He looked from Arthur to Ashley and finally to Spencer. Ashley stood up and then found herself wrapped in a huge hug.
