Le Marais – (Chapter: For what it’s worth)
“Oh hon,” he said, tears in his eyes. He let Ashley go and gave Arthur a hug.
After the greetings, and his soft kiss on Spencer’s forehead, he asked about her condition. Ashley couldn’t listen, and the shudders set in to her body. Arthur must have noticed because he pulled Gray out into the corridor and the brunette was thoroughly grateful.
When they returned Gray looked, well, grey. Ashley didn’t want to think about it. In the last hour sitting next to Spencer she’d decided that the only way to get through of this was to not even think that everything wasn’t going to be ok. She was on a pure, optimistic train and she wasn’t getting off until Spencer was back at home, awake and in her arms; permanently in her arms.
She held onto the blonde’s hand again, sitting by the bedside and stroking softly. There was silence between the four of them, Gray and Arthur having said everything out of earshot.
Eventually Gray put another hand on her shoulder.
“I’ll pick the kids up today,” he said.
Oh god the kids. Ashley hadn’t even thought about it. She wasn’t sure she could face them. Actually, she wasn’t sure she could leave Spencer.
“Thank-you,” she whispered.
“Ash, can we have a talk outside?”
She looked up from Spencer to Gray, confused, and then nodded. In the corridor he gave her another hug,
“Anything I can do, anything at all, you let me know.” He said. She nodded again, hugging him back and squeezing out two tears on his shoulder. “I’ll have the kids at my place tonight, but…” he stopped looking at her. “I think you should be there when we tell Elly.”
She swallowed. “Gray, I…”
“She’ll want you there Ash, she won’t take this so well. Besides, she’s a smart kid, she’s going to know something’s up the second I pick her up.”
Ashley nodded again.
“I’ll come by.”
“Thanks.”
He left, and she walked back in the room. Her focus was back on Spencer, firmly. And it wouldn’t change.
*******************************
Spencer trudged silently through the muddy path with the two strangers feeling frightened and unsure. She was thankful that the brunette seemed to be somewhat protecting her, but at the same time, she didn’t trust the man, with his gun.

OMG I love you. The plot twist… brilliant! I’m a total WWII fanatic… so this is def. right up my ally… have I mentioned… I love you??? So is Ash a Jew hiding from the Gestapo? And the man, Jean-Luc… represents Grey right?? Or did I miss something in history class? Oh have you read the book Anne Frank and Me by Cherie Bennett and Jeff Gottesfeld? This chapter really reminded of it.. which is a good thing, the book was definitely worth the read! Why is Spencer dreaming of WWII though??? Can’t wait to see where you take this… One more thing the line “She is the baby,” Ashley said. In her own head the choked out words echoed, ‘my baby.’ AWWWWWWWWWWWW loved that! Awesome stuff girl… keep it up…You never cease to amaze me with your writing!!!
