Cheaters Never Prosper – (Chapter: Two- You're Just Broken)

“Hi Laura… I am looking for Spencer Carlin, has she been at work the past few days?” Inquired Ashley, trying to sound as causal as physically possible.

The woman on the other end sounded as if she recognized the name, because she responded right away, “No, Spencer’s been out sick for several days now.”

“Oh.” Ashley sunk into her couch, her heart overcome with this incredible sinking feeling, “Thank you.”

After she hung up Ashley just stared straight ahead, clenching and unclenching her fist as she tried to decide what she was going to do. She needed to know Spencer was okay, and if she wasn’t, she needed to save her. Until she did she would not be able to think of anything else. Before she could really contemplate what she was doing she was in her car and driving towards Spencer’s, her heart racing the entire way.

Parking on the opposite side of the street she glanced at the clock on her dashboard, trying to remember what job Spencer had said Nick worked. It was 3pm, and she was pretty certain he was a lawyer of some kind, which meant that he’d most likely be at the office. Clinging to that bit of knowledge she exited her car and walked tentatively up the blonde’s driveway towards the front door, only seeing Spencer’s car.

Glancing over her shoulder she finally rang the doorbell, feeling her stomach lurch oddly at the sound of it echoing throughout the house. She didn’t know why she was so nervous; she supposed she was just worried about how Spencer would react to her just showing up like this.

“Nick there is no one he-“ Spencer stopped herself halfway through opened the door, her mouth opening then shutting a few times. Nick had been doing this thing lately where he stopped by on his lunch hour to make sure no one was in the house with her, and that‘s who she expected to be there.

“Oh my god, Spencer!” Ashley exclaimed the moment she saw the girl. She had a massive shiner around her right eye and her upper lip looked cut and still a bit swollen. Spencer looked ashamed and shifted her gaze to the ground, not wanting Ashley to see her face.

“Ash, you shouldn’t be here, you need to go.” The blonde spoke, or more accurately mumbled. Ashley was still in a bit of shock, although not enough to keep her from responding.

“Did he hit you?” Ashley asked the obvious, but it was really the only thing she could manage to say.

“You need to go.” Spencer repeated, her voice shaking slightly, “I’m fine, just leave me alone, okay?”

“Leave you alone? Here? Spencer, I can’t do that.” The brunette pleaded, not understanding how she could mean so little to Spencer that she’d rather stay with some abusive asshole than be safe with her.

“You can and you will. Look, I can’t see you anymore. I’m married and I have responsibilities, I…” The girl paused, her voice cracking as she chewed her bottom lip. She couldn’t find it in herself to look Ashley in the eye, so instead she stared over her shoulder.

Ashley looked exasperated, her eyes wide and desperate, “Spencer, what could possibly be tying you down to this place? Sure your married, but this isn’t the 20’s, he can’t just do this to you. You could leave him, you could-“

“Ashley stop, please.” Spencer pleaded, interrupting the girl and shaking her head side to side, “Really it’s not that simple.”

“What’s not simple? Because it seems pretty simple to me.” Ashley would have continued but the next words out of Spencer’s mouth stopped her completely in her tracks.

    “I’m pregnant.”
