Cheaters Never Prosper – (Chapter: Two- You're Just Broken)
Walking up her front steps she frowned at her wooden door, feeling sick to her stomach as she read the words ‘STAY AWAY’. They’d been etched with a key in big, angry letters across the wood, and they made the girl nervous. Someone who’d scratch something like this into a door certainly didn’t seem harmless to her. Unlocking the door she stepped inside, collapsing onto her couch.
She stared at the blank TV for a while, just waiting for the phone to ring. After some time she finally fell asleep, slumping over on the couch fully clothed. When she woke up the next morning the first thing she did was check her phone for missed calls. There were none. Groaning the girl checked the clock and noted she had about 20 minutes to get to work. She began rushing around, trying to clean herself up before rushing out the door and heading to the small diner around the corner where she waited tables.
Her entire 12 hour shift she kept her phone in her pocket, praying that at any moment it’d ring and Spencer would assure her she was indeed, fine. But, it never rang, and the longer she waited the more concerned she was becoming. Her instincts kept telling her that something just wasn’t right, and it was starting to make her crazy.
When after two days there was still no contact from Spencer, Ashley decided to make the call. Dialing her cell phone number she lifted the phone up to her ear. When a male voice answered she nearly choked.
“Hello? Who is this?” The man spoke abruptly, in an almost demanding manner.
“Michelle, I’m a friend of Spencer’s- Is she there?” Ashley told the small lie; fairly positive the man already knew her name and not wanting to get Spencer in trouble.
“No she’s not. I’ll tell her you called, good bye.” As he was hanging up Ashley swore she could hear a female voice in the background telling him to ‘quit it’. Her stomach flipped, a feeling of panic beginning to set in. Something was wrong. She knew Spencer worked at the Los Angeles Times and on an impulse dialed 411, getting the number for the company’s office building.
“This is Laura with the Los Angeles Times, how can I help you?” A female spoke on the other line and Ashley exhaled, trying to keep herself from getting too wound up.
