    Work to Do Chapter 14

“The first few weeks, I chalked it up to you just not thinking of it, but I wasn’t sure what I thought about that,” Dana laughed.

Alice smiled sadly, recognizing Dana’s insecurity and hating herself for being so lost in her own she’d missed it.

“Alice, it’s okay. It’s funny, after a while, I started not wanting you to connect them.”

    Alice looked at her questioningly.

“I didn’t want to be like all the other names attached to you.” She explained, shrugging.

    Alice looked at Dana, amazed.

    “I am such an idiot.”

Dana picked up her hand, and kissed it.

“No. You’re not. You’re a very bright woman, Alice. And it sounds
to me like you’ve opened the big black bag marked ‘Lenore’. “

Alice took Dana’s hand and returned the kiss to her upturned palm.

“Where’s my phone? I think I’m going to need Dr. Stella on quick dial.”

Dana laughed with her but grew serious after a moment.

“Do you still want to go to couple’s therapy with me, Al?”

Alice’s stomach hurt, as she understood Dana’s question.

“Awww, Dana. We are a couple. I didn’t mean we weren’t. I hope we
always will be, in spite of my screwed up little brain. But to be a
full couple, in every sense of the word, I think I need to open up that
    bag you were talking about

“Would you understand if I wanted to see Dr. Rudnick by myself some
too? I still want to go with you,” Alice tried to reassure her friend.

Dana nodded slowly, though she was still unclear where they stood. If
they were going to continue to see Stella together she needed to be
    sure.

“Alice, are we ‘dating’? Are you my girlfriend?” she asked. She watched Alice intently for her reaction.

Alice swallowed. “Wow. Why beat around the bush, Dana?”

“I’m serious Alice, at Helena’s thing last Tuesday, a woman asked me if I’m seeing anyone I realized I had no idea.”

“Did you want to go out with her?” Alice asked quietly.

“No.” Dana sighed. “I didn’t want to go out with her. That wasn’t my
point Almy point is I couldn’t answer the question. Am I seeing
someone?” Dana waited for Alice to look at her before she asked, “What
    would you have told her?”

Alice looked at Dana helplessly, unsure what she could say that she hadn’t already.

Dana looked back to the dog park and sipped her coffee.

“I didn’t mean to put you on the spot,” she said uncomfortably.

    “Dana” Alice began.

“No. I get it, Alice” Dana stopped her, embarrassed. Although it was
clear that she didn’t. After a few moments she stood and stretched.
Alice understood that breakfast was over.

As they walked to the door Alice miserably tried to think of an excuse
to get together later. She hated leaving things like this.

“Want me to bring a movie over tonight? You could make me something with soy?” She gave Dana a hopeful look.

Dana cracked her neck, as she scoured her brain for an excuse. She did
not want a pity date with Alice tonight. Failing to come up with
    anything she simply asked,

“Can I get a rain check?”

Frustrated, Alice agreed and told her she’d call later. Walking to her car, she wondered what the ***** had just happened.

    1. This is weird I posted my comments twice but it wouldn’t show. Starlai, you crack me up LOL. Cape, blame Floroda and Thanksgiving all you want but this was a great update! Is it wrong that I find Dana’s insecurities and confusion endearing? Love Alice’s desparate attempts to reaasure her. So it is Dana’s turn to turn up at the doorstep in the early hours of the morning? :)

    2. Yay, I did back flips when I saw you (or Layla, I should say) finally posted. And I’m not acrobatic, so you understand the feat that was. Great chapter, but this time I felt a little pang of hurt instead of the usual warm fuzzies! Looking forward to the next installment.

    3. Nooooo… they were doing so well – slowly getting more in the open, then BAM – the door shut. I was excited to see the new chapter up. With the holiday, I didn’t expect to see this until next week. Great job! I really like the layers to the the characters and their relationship.

    4. I agree with Layla’s comment about Alice’s attempt to reassure Dana. It’s too bad that she can’t do that no matter how much she wants to. She just doesn’t seem capable of giving Dana what she knows that Dana wants right now.

    5. capes, are you taking lessons from jac, of course Alice (knocking her head the the palm of my hand) you and Dana are a couple. Can’t wait to see how you fix this. Great chapter looking foward to next week.

    6. Oh cape_gray, I’ve loved both fics you’ve posted tonight. Dismembering an arm is slighty disturbing, but this fic made up for it. I loved what Dana had to say to Alice, first thing in the morning. You really have become a tease, I was expecting a ‘nap’ plus more but the tingling feeling I got after reading this makes up for that, too. So update soon!

    7. This was nice, though complicated. And if Alice is opening the big black bag marked “Lenore”, your story could go on for a while yet (not that I’m complaining about that). I think the answer to Dana’s “Am I seeing anyone?” question is “Well, I’m not not seeing anyone” isn’t it? Oh, and I loved it even more that you managed to get a dog park into the story.

    8. Not what I was expecting at all but totally excellent!!!!! It really is two steps forward, one step back for these two. Am beginning to seriously feel for Dana in all of this – come on Alice have some faith!!!!!!!!!! Looking forward to next Monday already (and that is not a sentence I thought I would ever utter.)
