    Work to Do Chapter 14

    6:00am Friday morning, Present Day

    Dana’s House

For the second time that morning Alice found herself being greeted by a half-awake brunette.

“I’m not going to marry Tonya if that’s why you’re here,” Dana yawned.

“Nah. I took care of that already,” Alice smiled nervously.

Dana waited, watching as Alice’s face sobered.

“I wanted to see how you’re doing,” she admitted.

“Yesterday at therapy was hard for both of us. I should have called
you last night to check on you I should take better care of you Dane.”

Dana opened her door wider, inviting Alice inside.

Alice slipped by her, pausing briefly to kiss the tennis player’s cheek before heading for Dana’s kitchen.

“Are you training or can I make you some?” Alice asked, as she retrieved the coffee filter and grinder from Dana’s cupboard.

“I was planning to skip my run this morning,” Dana lied. “I’ll have some.”

Alice’s look told her she knew Dana was canceling her workout for her and she appreciated it.

Abruptly, Alice went to Dana wrapping her arms around her. She hugged
her friend tightly, grateful that she was welcome to do so. Dana
returned the embrace wondering where this was going.

In tandem, they assembled juice and bagels to go with their coffee. A
short time later they were sitting out on Dana’s stoop having
breakfast. Alice watched appreciatively as Dana stretched her arms in
    the sun.

“I love this,” she told Dana, indicating the two of them enjoying the morning.

    Dana smiled. “Me too.”

Biting her lip, Alice took a breath, and gave Dana a “Here goes,” look.

“So I’ve been doing a lot of thinking obviously.” She laughed nervously.

Dana looked anxious herself as she waited.

“Dana, I have a ton of things I want to say to you but I can’t, at
least not now. I think we both know I’m not ready to say some of the
    things I might want too.

But there are other things I can’t go another minute without telling
you like how incredibly sorry I am that I blamed you when it was
completely ME who ran out on us.”

“I think that was worse than the stalking” Alice admitted. She stopped
abruptly. “Now there’s a sentence you don’t hear every day”

Dana half smiled, she had learned not to get distracted by Alice’s humor.

    1. This is weird I posted my comments twice but it wouldn’t show. Starlai, you crack me up LOL. Cape, blame Floroda and Thanksgiving all you want but this was a great update! Is it wrong that I find Dana’s insecurities and confusion endearing? Love Alice’s desparate attempts to reaasure her. So it is Dana’s turn to turn up at the doorstep in the early hours of the morning? :)

    2. Yay, I did back flips when I saw you (or Layla, I should say) finally posted. And I’m not acrobatic, so you understand the feat that was. Great chapter, but this time I felt a little pang of hurt instead of the usual warm fuzzies! Looking forward to the next installment.

    3. Nooooo… they were doing so well – slowly getting more in the open, then BAM – the door shut. I was excited to see the new chapter up. With the holiday, I didn’t expect to see this until next week. Great job! I really like the layers to the the characters and their relationship.

    4. I agree with Layla’s comment about Alice’s attempt to reassure Dana. It’s too bad that she can’t do that no matter how much she wants to. She just doesn’t seem capable of giving Dana what she knows that Dana wants right now.

    5. capes, are you taking lessons from jac, of course Alice (knocking her head the the palm of my hand) you and Dana are a couple. Can’t wait to see how you fix this. Great chapter looking foward to next week.

    6. Oh cape_gray, I’ve loved both fics you’ve posted tonight. Dismembering an arm is slighty disturbing, but this fic made up for it. I loved what Dana had to say to Alice, first thing in the morning. You really have become a tease, I was expecting a ‘nap’ plus more but the tingling feeling I got after reading this makes up for that, too. So update soon!

    7. This was nice, though complicated. And if Alice is opening the big black bag marked “Lenore”, your story could go on for a while yet (not that I’m complaining about that). I think the answer to Dana’s “Am I seeing anyone?” question is “Well, I’m not not seeing anyone” isn’t it? Oh, and I loved it even more that you managed to get a dog park into the story.

    8. Not what I was expecting at all but totally excellent!!!!! It really is two steps forward, one step back for these two. Am beginning to seriously feel for Dana in all of this – come on Alice have some faith!!!!!!!!!! Looking forward to next Monday already (and that is not a sentence I thought I would ever utter.)
