What I Want for Christmas – Part II
Bette no longer appeared invincible, her vulnerabilities were much closer to the surface and she was not entirely comfortable in her new skin. Bette had learned to look at the reality of her relationship with Tina instead of the idealized version that they and their friends had bought into. Of course, the truth is that every relationship takes work. Ironically, being in a relationship with Jodi had given Bette a bit of a perspective on what dating and being in a relationship with Bette must have been like for Tina.
Jodi considered her work to be more important than Bette’s and often Bette had no idea when to expect Jodi since she would lose track of time while working in her studio. Bette compromised or gave into Jodi (depending on how you looked at it) more than she ever did with Tina. It wasn’t always easy for Bette to take a back seat and play second fiddle and sometimes, she felt like arm candy. Bette wasn’t an outsider in the art world and she could talk the talk with Jodi’s artist friends because her knowledge of art was genuinely deep, yet being the Dean of an art school lacked panache. Running the CAC and landing provocations did win her some kudos, but she felt it didn’t have the same cool factor as actually having a reputation as a talented artist. Bette was many things, but bohemian was not one of them. Bette was truly out of her element with Jodi’s non-hearing friends, and while her signing had improved considerably, it was still hard for her to follow and participate in their conversations. Being known as the woman who got Jodi to commit in certain circles was quite a change for Bette.
Bette’s relationship with Jodi had its challenges and sometimes she missed coming home to a woman who she knew was in her corner 100% of the time, someone who took care of her emotionally and physically. Tina had grown tired of that role before and there was no guarantee that if they got back together Bette would have the support she wanted and missed. Despite the challenges, Bette enjoyed being with Jodi. They shared a love of art and had wonderful discussions and a real exchange of opinions. It was nice to have someone in her life that shared her passion for art. Bette and Jodi also shared a healthy physical relationship. Sure Bette had told Dan Foxworthy that sex wasn’t the most important thing in a relationship, and their relationship was still relatively new, but Bette knew that being shown that she was desired, especially after Tina had pushed her away physically, whether it was because she hadn’t forgiven Bette for the affair or it was due to her desire men was up for debate, but it didn’t change the fact that it was very important.

Looking forward to more of this story.
I always find it interesting as to what writers read into the JoBette relationship to justify Bette putting up with her shit..not to mention the lack of chemistry onscreen. I’m glad you put some depth into the Tina character. She has future plans. She has fun on the side when she is out of town without Angelica. I’m glad she didn’t third wheel it with Bette and Jodi.. she is better than that BS. Plus, I like that you addressed the Alice issue. While I hated Tina going back to men I always thought Alice was super immature about it.
madcapper, that was really good…poor bette, its such a frustrating place to be, with those worries about the future. i think you’ve drawn it all out really well. i felt it right at the end, that ‘damn’ feeling and i swear, i sighed along with her! great work, really good.
I look forward to more initimate conversations like the one Bette and Tina just shared. To me that is what a true relationship is built on. Time spent talking about whatever comes up. Tina was right in going off on her own for Christmas, even though she is feels all alone now. It seems that both Bette and Tina feel all alone together.
yes I got right into this and Tina’s future plans…pps
I have been waiting and hoping that you would continue this story. All of your stories are so well written. Thanks for this–can’t wait for the next chapter! Lin
thanks for continuing with the story, can’t wait for more
Hopefully Bette realizes that even though she is scared Tina is who she wants. I love how Bette and Tina banter and connect in this chapter.
Bette, they were the worst of times, but they were the best. You gotta take the good with the bad, and with Tina you bad was always made better. Love the conversation between the two, a few more like that should do it. Bette, Tina has not moved on without you, she’s just waiting for you to open up your awesomely beautiful eyes, and see that she’s been right there all along. Jodi, sorry, you and Bette have never and will never have that special connection that make B&T who they are and what we love.
Hope Bette will realized that Tina is the one for her and please dump jodi soon. Anyway please post more, thanks!
Their conversation was so relaxed, beautiful! nice update :)
Vacations in Paris and vacations in Napa, God I hate when that happens. Now get back to work and post more often.
Weeeeee! More please. :D
