The Greatest Love Story Ever Told

Shane moved from Tina’s line of sight, unable to move her head Tina dropped her eyes, shamefaced at accepting her fate, she didn’t want to look at Bette she knew what was coming, live a life where her long term memory was irrevocably damaged, a life where she could remember what she had for breakfast but no recollection of anything she did yesterday or any day before that. If this was her destiny she would go out with every detail of her life with Bette, her children, her grandchildren, her friends intact.

The whole room held their breath, not a dry eye between them, Bette had no idea what the fuck was going on in Tina’s head, whatever it was it was down to her to get it out, she was well aware of the consequences of keeping the remnants of that damn tumour in there and a Tina with no memories was a bearable thought, no Tina at all was just not something that she could even begin to come to terms with.

“Tee, remember what you said to me, even if your memories where wiped clean your heart would find it’s way home to me, do you remember that”

Tina closed her eyes, that she did remember and she had meant every word, her foolish resolve wavering, did the details matter? The how they fell in love, the how they had cleared every hurdle that was thrown their way, what mattered was that they had, what mattered was that if everyday was a new day Bette would always be by her side, no matter what.

“Tina I know your scared, fuck I’m petrified and if the worst happens and you do lose your long term memory everyday I will ask you to marry me and everyday you will say yes, everyday we will go the exact spot on the beach at exactly the same time, everyday I will promise you forever, we haven’t had our forever Tee, forever is not now, forever is until the end of time, until the cows come home, until Alice throws us a snowball from hell, Tee please don’t give up, 55 years is not enough, it could never be enough, I want more, I want a lot more, please do not even consider not giving us more” Bette sank to her knees oblivious to the fact that it was just not her own heart that was breaking but everyone else’s in the room. All tear filled eyes one by one dropped from the forlorn figure of Bette in the gallery and looked expectantly at Tina, silently begging her to allow Shane to finish the job she had started.
