The Dying of the Light Part 11

Stepping back into the hall as so not to make Bette know she intruded she started to stamp her feet, belatedly releasing that that was not normal behaviour for her, but she hoped Bette wouldn’t call her on it or even care.

“Morning Bette.”  She greeted as she stuck her head around the corner, coming face to face with a very drawn looking Bette.  “Are you okay?”  She asked, placing her hand on Bette’s forehead to test for a fever.

Bette shook her head, dislodging Helena’s hand as she took a step back.  “I’m fine.  Just couldn’t sleep.”

Helena nodded, sure that wasn’t the whole story but she let Bette keep her own council.  “Feel like a good English breakfast?”  She asked, her stomach craving grease and sausage.

“No, you go ahead.”  Bette answered, returning her attention to her painting.  She really wasn’t hungry.  Everything she ate tasted like ashes and her stomach often rebelled.

Helena looked at her a moment, about to object when she noticed the tremor in Bette’s hand.  Something was wrong, and the least of the problems was getting her to eat a meal, that Helena was sure of.  That didn’t prevent her from planning a dinner tonight with Kit, hoping that her sister could bully her in a way Helena couldn’t.  No one could make you act, or guilt you as good of Kit Porter.  A talent second to none, and one that Helena was not above exploiting.  It was all for a good cause, and she knew Kit would agree.

Bette started to fear that Tina wasn’t going to keep her promise when the hours ticked by.  8, 9, 10 and 11.  Where was she?  Did she only tell me she’ll bring Angelica to get me off the phone?  Did I sound that pathetic that she felt the need to lie?

Why wasn’t she here?  Why did Tina keep pretending, when all Bette really needed and wanted was the truth.

“Bette?”  Tina whispered, unsure if she wanted to disturbed the obviously introspective woman.  She had let herself in the house with a spare key Helena had given her so she could bring Angie over to visit.  So she could keep and eye on the woman.

Bette started, surprised at the appearance of Tina.  The woman she was equally cursing and understanding.  “Hi.”  She replied, looking around for Angelica.  She couldn’t wait to hold her little girl, it’s the one thing that got her through dawn.

    1. I’ve always known Bette to be a fighter in every sense of the word. I can always find her standing strong and tall, ready to argue with anybody over anything and to never hold back. This is one of those times where she, as the poet wrote, has to rage against the dying of the light. Bring her back. Don’t let her fall into the abyss.

    2. You are an amazing writer. It makes my heart hurt to see Bette is such pain but to me its completely realistic especially after everything that’s happened. I’m looking forward to your next chapter with the hope that Tina will be able to reach Bette and help her to regain herself.

    3. You have my heart in turmoil over this. I’m so afraid that Bette will perish and never return. Oh please let Bette come back from the brink. The darkness she stands on the edge of can so easily swallow her up.

    4. This is the thing. Whether or not Tina allows Bette to adopt or see Angelica or be in her life in any way is completely dependent on Tina and her moods and even whims. She has all the power, and Bette was absolutely powerless. It is incredible that she would say that Bette didn’t love Angie or wouldn’t even miss her. So to keep Angelica from her just because she could, and because it was the best way to hurt Bette, because she was pissed at her for not being who Tina wanted her to be, was to me unforgivable. Tina can have as much fear as she likes, but a real human being deals with that fear on their own. It doesn’t give anyone the right to try to destroy anyone else’s life, and she has purposely and vindictively tried to destroy Bette. I am afraid for her. But hey, whatever happens is all good, cos Tina’s “not that bad.” I find it confusing that the author thinks that while writing so exquisitely of Bette’s destruction at her hands.

    5. If there is something that we are savouring here, in this amazing update of yours, is the pace timing. We shall say it is just PERFECT. First, because things happening inside Bette must not be rushed. She needs that time to gather herself together and come out of the dark place where she is in. Tina’s determination to show Bette the adoption papers was a smart move. Although they can numb her mind, at first, due to her weakened state of mind. Once reality sinks in, her joy will start to come around. We understand that the first social worker who visited B&T was a complete monster, BUT as Joyce pointed out, this new one could do the right thing. Recognition of Bette as the second parent. In order to accomplish acceptance, she needs to let go and return to sanity for the sake of her daughter. This is getting better and better, Deean. Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks. 6. Hello My Beautiful Dee… Oh how you paint the words of pain and love in such beautiful bold brush strokes… much like Bette’s painting you are crafting a masterpiece of pure unadulterated emotions… you have so beautifully rendered all of Bette’s fears… losses… mistrust… as well as Tina’s continued subdued need to be there and allow Bette to take her time… create her own path back to her… I find this is the sign of a purer ‘love’ yes Tina did hurt Bette more then anyone should be hurt and no I am not forgetting Bette’s own pathway of betrayal… but for me Bette has paid for that a million times over… I love the tenderness of friendship you have brought out in Helena and yes I agree if anyone can save Bette from herself it is ‘Kit’ and ‘Angelica’ they are the keys to Bette’s soul right now… and maybe just maybe Tina can find her way back with a little patience and a lot of faith… you my most amazing friend know just how to pull out some of the strongest emotions within my soul… for I have felt a loss… not like Bette’s but a loss that sent me into this kind of darkness… and I thank you dearly for allowing me to remember it… and to rejoice for I have made it through with your friendship I continue to make it though… you completely amaze me my most beautiful Dee… love and hugs, JC (Latin Nephew to those Salsa Angels and Ever Proud to be Cuzzie to the ever Talented Eunichick)
