The Dying of the Light Part 11
“Can I talk to Angelica?” Bette rasped, her words slightly slurred together.
“Are you drunk?” She didn’t know what else to ask, why would Bette be ringing at this time to talk to a child.
“I cant hear you nod Bette.” For an articulate woman with a pleasant phone manner, she often forget when drunk or tired that she had to speak to people on the phone. Hand gestures and head movements could not be seen by such rudimentary devices.
“No. Can I speak to my Boo please?” It sounded like she was close to tears. Tina was worried, she didn’t know what was going on and being so late there wasn’t much she could do.
“Bette, what’s wrong babe?” She asked earnestly.
“Please Tee, please.” This time she did cry, the soft sobs cascading down the line straight into Tina’s ear. Her heart clenched and her stomach dropped.
“Honey, she’s asleep. It’s really really late, I was sleeping too.” Tina explained, calmly, as if she was speaking to a frightened child. “You can see her in the morning.”
“That’ll be too late.” Bette spat out in fear.
Fear gripped Tina, too late for what? She wasn’t making any sense. “Bette, baby. What’s wrong?” Tina tried again, fruitlessly hoping for an answer.
“Nothing.” She sighed defeated. “I was just hoping to speak to my… to your.” A sob. “I miss her.”
The honesty of the moment was a balm to Tina, “I’ll bring her in the morning Bette. I promise.”
Silence again, Tina thought that Bette must be nodding again. “I don’t want to talk.” She whispered, as if making a confession.
Tina sighed. She wasn’t sure she could avoid talking, but she knew she had to calm Bette enough to get her to sleep. Tomorrow they could both deal with reality, “And we wont have too.”
“Good.”
“Goodnight Bette.”
**********
Bette was still painting as the sun came up, the violence of the initial strokes had been subdued, were softer. She had started to paint in shades of grey, like all the colour had started to bleed from the canvas; like her life, it really had.
She was so caught up in her work that she didn’t hear Helena come into the room. Helena was fascinated by the painting, strong colours and bold strokes were like a border to a painting that was predominately light and shadows, all in various shades of grey. It was beautiful, even though Helena had no idea what it represented. She couldn’t wait to talk to Bette about it, but resolved to wait until she was finished. Growing up with a mother who had a fondness for art, and more for the male artists, she had learnt a lot about Artists; specifically you don’t question a piece until it has all come together.

I’ve always known Bette to be a fighter in every sense of the word. I can always find her standing strong and tall, ready to argue with anybody over anything and to never hold back. This is one of those times where she, as the poet wrote, has to rage against the dying of the light. Bring her back. Don’t let her fall into the abyss.
You are an amazing writer. It makes my heart hurt to see Bette is such pain but to me its completely realistic especially after everything that’s happened. I’m looking forward to your next chapter with the hope that Tina will be able to reach Bette and help her to regain herself.
You have my heart in turmoil over this. I’m so afraid that Bette will perish and never return. Oh please let Bette come back from the brink. The darkness she stands on the edge of can so easily swallow her up.
so heart wrenching this one…
This is the thing. Whether or not Tina allows Bette to adopt or see Angelica or be in her life in any way is completely dependent on Tina and her moods and even whims. She has all the power, and Bette was absolutely powerless. It is incredible that she would say that Bette didn’t love Angie or wouldn’t even miss her. So to keep Angelica from her just because she could, and because it was the best way to hurt Bette, because she was pissed at her for not being who Tina wanted her to be, was to me unforgivable. Tina can have as much fear as she likes, but a real human being deals with that fear on their own. It doesn’t give anyone the right to try to destroy anyone else’s life, and she has purposely and vindictively tried to destroy Bette. I am afraid for her. But hey, whatever happens is all good, cos Tina’s “not that bad.” I find it confusing that the author thinks that while writing so exquisitely of Bette’s destruction at her hands.
If there is something that we are savouring here, in this amazing update of yours, is the pace timing. We shall say it is just PERFECT. First, because things happening inside Bette must not be rushed. She needs that time to gather herself together and come out of the dark place where she is in. Tina’s determination to show Bette the adoption papers was a smart move. Although they can numb her mind, at first, due to her weakened state of mind. Once reality sinks in, her joy will start to come around. We understand that the first social worker who visited B&T was a complete monster, BUT as Joyce pointed out, this new one could do the right thing. Recognition of Bette as the second parent. In order to accomplish acceptance, she needs to let go and return to sanity for the sake of her daughter. This is getting better and better, Deean. Hugs & kisses on both your cheeks. I so just caught up. WOW!!! Poor Bette, I hope Tina keeps her word and let Bette be in Angles life. Now please let Bette come back to life. Thank you
Hello My Beautiful Dee… Oh how you paint the words of pain and love in such beautiful bold brush strokes… much like Bette’s painting you are crafting a masterpiece of pure unadulterated emotions… you have so beautifully rendered all of Bette’s fears… losses… mistrust… as well as Tina’s continued subdued need to be there and allow Bette to take her time… create her own path back to her… I find this is the sign of a purer ‘love’ yes Tina did hurt Bette more then anyone should be hurt and no I am not forgetting Bette’s own pathway of betrayal… but for me Bette has paid for that a million times over… I love the tenderness of friendship you have brought out in Helena and yes I agree if anyone can save Bette from herself it is ‘Kit’ and ‘Angelica’ they are the keys to Bette’s soul right now… and maybe just maybe Tina can find her way back with a little patience and a lot of faith… you my most amazing friend know just how to pull out some of the strongest emotions within my soul… for I have felt a loss… not like Bette’s but a loss that sent me into this kind of darkness… and I thank you dearly for allowing me to remember it… and to rejoice for I have made it through with your friendship I continue to make it though… you completely amaze me my most beautiful Dee… love and hugs, JC (Latin Nephew to those Salsa Angels and Ever Proud to be Cuzzie to the ever Talented Eunichick)
