The Art of Chemistry (2)
“Alice, I told you already – I’m not tanning. I’m relaxing.” And as the sunglasses were propped up into her hair, Bette caught sight of Tina, and they were both quiet. Tina was so breathless she wasn’t even sure her pulse was present. Had she died? Was this heaven? The woman took her breath away.
Alice interrupted their moment.
“You’re not reading Cosmo, Bette. I brought one for you, and look at you. All dull in the corner of the blanket. I know you’re tanning over there.”
“For the last time, I don’t tan,” Bette sighed, dropping onto her back again. “My skin is always this color, Alice.”
Tina wanted to speak, to say anything, but she just couldn’t. She couldn’t even sit. She could just stand in awe of the beautiful creature before her.
“Holy hell, Tina,” Alice teased, “Are you gonna sit or what? You’re scaring everyone.”
“You’re … Bette …” Tina finally breathed, stepping around the blanket to take the sight in once again. She had heard of Alice’s best friend, but she’d never seen her before. She’d never seen anything like her before.
Bette took her silence as arrogance, still offering her hand with a smile. “Yes, and you are … Tina?”
“Yeah yeah, get acquainted,” Alice mumbled, flipping another page of her magazine. “Oh geez, look at this horrible skirt! It’s just sick. Look at what some people can get away with!”
“Sorry. She’s not … beach-trained yet, but I’m trying,” Bette smirked, pulling her sunglasses down again and shifting over so that Tina could lay down next to her on the large blanket.
Very slowly, Tina put her things down and sat on the blanket with her back to both girls. She was so humbled by Bette’s beauty that she lost her usual easygoing nature, and suddenly became as shy as she’d ever been. She swallowed hard, just knowing that Bette was still behind her.
“So … Alice tells me you’re a doctor,” Bette said by way of making some conversation between them.
“Uh …” Tina breathed, worried about the state of her mental health around this woman. She had never felt so lost in all of her life. “…Yes.”
Tina knew how terrible her manners were, so she tried desperately to ask a question of her own. However, it came out the wrong way. “You … like art.” Her heart warmed when Bette chuckled, because her smile proved a sort of inner happiness, but then she was disappointed when she realized how strange she had sounded. Nothing was ever as hard for her.

Hi GR thanks for posting! The way you describe the situations is so vivid! It’s so cute and hilarious. In the other hand, I can imagine how torturing it is to regret on your own awkwardness while you actually would like to be yourself and presenting the best of you in front of somebody! …Looking forward to read more! PPVS :-) and … Thanks for rivergirl2121 for sharing it with GR (and us) and giving her inspiration to write this story :-)
Just caught up. This is just wonderful thank you love it.
neither woman is very artful at the moment. I hope one of them gets it together soon.
This is a very interesting start and I really like it, even more so in that it is based on a true story.
