    Survival: Chapter 6

Suddenly, Lara regretted her decision to announce her return to L.A. to the gang all at once.  She had thought it might make things less awkward this way, but from the uncomfortable glances being traded back and forth through the group, she could tell she had made a mistake by showing up unannounced.

But, as she started trying to think up a reason to leave, Lara heard a familiar voice calling out from behind a group of people standing near their table.  Suddenly, Kit pushed her way through the crowd and caught Lara’s eye.

“Lara!  Good to see you, girl!” Kit yelled as she made her way over to Lara and wrapped her in an enthusiastic hug.

“Great to see you, Kit,” Lara replied with a laugh, grateful to be greeted by someone who was unreservedly happy to see her.

“So, are you going to come take over my kitchen and put me out of my misery?” Kit asked, leaping right into business.

“Uh, I don’t know,” Lara answered, taken aback by the offer.  “Are you giving me the job?”

“It’s there anytime you want it,” Kit said sincerely.  “The kitchen is in a state of disaster right now.  Nothing has been the same since you left.”

“That’s the truth,” Alice muttered under her breath.

“What was that, Alice?” Kit asked.

“I said, how was Paris?” Alice replied, trying to keep her voice as light as possible.

Lara looked at her with an uncertain expression.  “It was alright,” she said.  “The cooking course was great, but I decided to skip out a little early to come home.”

“Right,” Alice said, wincing inwardly as her voice came out sounding harsher than she had intended.  A stony silence descended on the group as everyone shared uncomfortable glances.

“Hey, Al!  What are you doing back here?  You guys need to move up to the stage!” Ellie called out as she made her way back to the table.  Taking an enormous swig of Alice’s beer, she suddenly became aware that she had interrupted an awkward silence.  Noticing Lara’s presence, she stepped over to her and held out her hand assertively.

“Hi, I’m Ellie, Alice’s sister,” she said.

“Nice to meet you,” Lara replied, taking Ellie’s hand.  “I’m Lara.”

    1. Well, you were right…that was pretty sappy, but wonderfully so. I actually said “awww” out loud there at the end. Ellie and Lara would totally be cute…is it weird that I can picture them together in my head, having no idea what Ellie looks like? Oh well. This was fantastic, as they always are.

    2. what a nice surprise to find such a quick update this evening! And, it’s totally sweet that you give me credit for spurring you to bring a sister into the mix. (though I have to say you’ve one upped me with the whole notion of Lara still being with a Pieszecki—just thank you for not bringing Lenore into the picture! Again, I loved the way you capture the inner turmoil of all the characters. And the way they work through it in relationship to the other characters (not only Alice and Dana, but also the whole gang with Lara, and Ellie with Alice and Lara with Dana and…well, you get the picture….I’m totally loving where this story is going!) I do think you’ve managed to nail the ‘living’ with cancer issue…as opposed to ‘dying’ with cancer, and I for one think that’s fantastic. Good luck with real life, and I’ll be waiting patiently for your return! :)

    3. so cute. i knew the ellie and lara thing was coming. though i didn’t know ellie was completely gay. go figure, right? well super update. thanks for being so quick. love it.

    5. I’ve been out of town so was so glad to catch up on your updates-wow, this chapter really moved things along. I heart this fic and how you are shaping things. The “debriefing” was totally sisterly–nice touch. And thank you for keeping my girl Lara in the mix, yay! Can’t wait to see what is in store for her (but I like what you’re getting at…) and Danish too. Please post soon, I’ll be leaping with joy!
