    Survival: Chapter 6

“Yeah,” Dana answered with a laugh.  “Hey, in my defence, it is a powerful drug.”

“I can’t believe you got up on stage and danced with Tegan and Sara!” Alice said, still laughing at the image of Dana on an acid trip.

“Yeah, well, I never did acid again.  In fact–” Dana trailed off as her gaze was diverted by something behind Alice’s shoulder.  Noticing her suddenly altered expression, the rest of the gang looked in the same direction and immediately fell into silence.

“Hi guys,” a familiar voice said quietly.

Alice turned around and saw what had caused everyone’s distraction.  Lara was standing directly behind her chair, looking uncertain and shy.  She glanced down at Alice and offered a tentative smile.

“Hi Alice,” she said quietly, giving her shoulder a brief squeeze before moving to Dana, who stood up to give her a tight hug.  Alice suddenly felt rooted to her chair as she watched their reunion.  All the laughter she had just shared with her friends drained from her face as she realised the inevitable had finally occurred: Lara was back from Paris.

“It’s good to see you, Lara,” Bette said warmly, moving around the table to give Lara a welcoming hug.  The rest of the gang followed suit, and soon Lara was sitting at the table beside Dana.

“When did you get back?” Dana asked.

“Just yesterday,” Lara responded.  “Luckily, I had decided to sublet my apartment to my brother for a few months while I was away, so the timing worked out really well.”

“So, you’re back in L.A. for good?” Jenny asked, adopting her characteristically blunt tone.  Shane nudged her gently to tell her to be quiet, but Jenny ignored her and continued.  “I just wouldn’t want you to have to leave so quickly again, with everything that’s going on.”

“Uh, yeah, I’m staying in L.A.,” Lara stammered nervously.  Even putting Jenny’s veiled accusation aside, Lara could suddenly feel an undercurrent of judgement coming from most of the people sitting around the table.  Although they were trying to hide their feelings, it didn’t take a genius to figure out that they were upset with her for having left so abruptly while Dana was ill.  Somewhat surprisingly, the only person there who Lara knew didn’t judge her for her choice to leave was Alice; however, she was also aware that there was a whole other set of reasons for Alice not to want her to be sitting at this table.

    1. Well, you were right…that was pretty sappy, but wonderfully so. I actually said “awww” out loud there at the end. Ellie and Lara would totally be cute…is it weird that I can picture them together in my head, having no idea what Ellie looks like? Oh well. This was fantastic, as they always are.

    2. what a nice surprise to find such a quick update this evening! And, it’s totally sweet that you give me credit for spurring you to bring a sister into the mix. (though I have to say you’ve one upped me with the whole notion of Lara still being with a Pieszecki—just thank you for not bringing Lenore into the picture! Again, I loved the way you capture the inner turmoil of all the characters. And the way they work through it in relationship to the other characters (not only Alice and Dana, but also the whole gang with Lara, and Ellie with Alice and Lara with Dana and…well, you get the picture….I’m totally loving where this story is going!) I do think you’ve managed to nail the ‘living’ with cancer issue…as opposed to ‘dying’ with cancer, and I for one think that’s fantastic. Good luck with real life, and I’ll be waiting patiently for your return! :)

    3. so cute. i knew the ellie and lara thing was coming. though i didn’t know ellie was completely gay. go figure, right? well super update. thanks for being so quick. love it.

    5. I’ve been out of town so was so glad to catch up on your updates-wow, this chapter really moved things along. I heart this fic and how you are shaping things. The “debriefing” was totally sisterly–nice touch. And thank you for keeping my girl Lara in the mix, yay! Can’t wait to see what is in store for her (but I like what you’re getting at…) and Danish too. Please post soon, I’ll be leaping with joy!
