Sunday Mornings: 3 – Seventeen Reasons Why Not …

Only slight sadness that Bette had left, slight sadness perhaps that she hadn’t taken that extra minute to prepare her for the Lez Girls actresses being there. Bette’s feelings were hurt, she was the villain after all, the rest all had character quirks which made them into heroines or comediennes, even the predator had a beauty which would carry her forth into the hearts of those who sat amongst the audience, but like Bella herself had said, she needed a little help with Bette’s ‘Why’s’

    ~

    “Why …”

Since that stupid woman had asked it so bluntly the night before, Bette’s mind ran in circles around that tiny little three letter word, why.

    Seventeen Reasons Why.

Her mind came back to the sign, to the words, to the meaning behind it when she presented it to Jodi, leaving it where it subsequently stood on display in New York, their one collaboration.

Since then her mind seemed to constantly question why, asking over and over if there really were seventeen reasons why she flew herself and a chunk of metal across the country to declare her love for that women when she knew deep down that she wasn’t entirely sure.

Why not wait, why not have made it up to her in some other way, or even let her go then, after all, that was always what was easiest.

Because of Tina, really, because she was desperate to prove that even if ‘they’ couldn’t stay together, she could do monogamy with someone, that in the world they currently occupied where Bette cheated and Bette lied, there was this one act she could follow through with. Because in the build up to winning her back her feelers were out, and they weren’t ready as a couple, everything still ran too close to the surface, emotions mixed with advice. She figured they’d take a couple more years, by which time monogamy might have run it’s course and the ‘Seventeen Reasons Why’ wouldn’t seem so close in the rear view mirror as before.

Why, because Jodi wasn’t Tina and why, because they fought. Because making it work with Jodi could never and would never make up for the things she did to hurt Tina and the things they did to hurt each other, their relationship, their friends and the foundations upon which they’d built so many intensely beautiful things,

    1. Perfect!!! You write them so unbelievably well… Can’t imagine what it’s gonna be after next week’s episode! These reasons why are just so right and beautifully worded… They (you) basically say it all about what real love is… Because sometimes it is simply wrong to think that love can be found in grand gestures, for true love resides in the most tiny and ridiculous details like the ” lift (of) a heartbeat with a twitch of her eyebrow, a wrinkle of her nose”. But I think your most powerful statement of this love is: “Because for every hurtful moment, every second she watched her with Henry and felt her heart being ripped free of her chest there’d be this tiny little moment, some joke or a stolen glance at her with Angie and the world would set itself right again, spinning them eventually back into each others arms.”… I bow to you, Sofa, thank you.

    2. You are THE BOMB! You are truly one of the VERY BEST writer’s on this site. I love your one chapter snippets like this. It is brilliant, and your words are so incredibly moving. Sofa, you could write twenty chapters a day and I would want more. Thanks hun.

    3. That was as good as I’ve read in many a day on this site. Full of insight into Bette’s inner mood, it seemed like a meditation of what could be again transposed over what has gone before. I loved this and I’ll be looping back to catch some more of your work. Thanks!

    4. very very lovely, even if it is tibette;) kidding hun…i liked especially the attention to those small (seemingly small but are they really? not the way you write them) details that make daily interactions into epic stories. xox
