“*****, how am I going make it back to the dorm in time?”
*****
“But Ronnie,” Serena whined.
“No, it’s already been decided. You’re coming in with me so get dressed.”
“I can’t just show up at your office.”
“Key word there… my office. And yes you can. I’m the boss, okay one of the bosses,” Veronica fixed seeing Serena’s expression, ” and if I want a friend, who is an excellent attorney, to consult on one of my cases, then how can anyone object?”
“It wouldn’t look right,” Serena rationed.
“***** looking right. Now go get dressed,” Veronica pushed her through the small archway.
*****
“Get a move on, Serena. I’m usually out of here by now,” Veronica Sessions shouted down the hall.
“How do I look?” Serena asked striking a pose by the fridge.
“Like a woman desperate for work,” Veronica smiled.
“I do?”
Serena glanced down at her navy pantsuit and lavender blouse.
“I’m kidding, Serena,” Veronica laughed, ” you look great. Now let’s go.”
*****
The ding of the elevator bell alerted Roger that his tenants were on the way down.
“Good morning, Ms. Veronica,” Roger greeted as the silver doors opened.
“Good morning, Roger. How is the weather today?”
“Very beautiful outside.”
“Good morning, Roger,” Serena said.
“Ms. Sutherland,” he nodded, “before I forget,” he reached behind his small desk and produced the note, “Someone dropped this off for you.”
“Thank you.”
Veronica opened the note and scanned the words.
“So who is it? A secret admirer?” Serena asked trying to peer over her shoulder.
“You’ll find out in due time,” Veronica teased.
Turning her attention to the doorman, Veronica said good bye.
*****
“I honestly don’t know what her reaction would be,” Veronica spoke into the phone.
Veronica had dialed the unfamiliar numbers at half past two. She wasn’t sure if getting involved in her friend’s personal life was right but at the rate Serena was going, Veronica thought the woman would never find the one.
“Veronica, is it okay if I…” Serena bursted into the operations manager’s office.
She held up her hand in apology when she saw Veronica on the phone.
“Sorry,” she whispered.
“Tell you what, forget what I said a minute ago. You and I both know that the subject will produce a bunch of excuses to not believe in the finality of verb. Ambush.”
