One week earlier…

Serena came back to New York without an apartment or a job. She really didn’t know why she came. There was nothing there for her, except her best friend Veronica. And that’s where she landed after the flight in from California.

“I never thought I would see the day when Serena Sutherland would run,” Veronica Session said licking the salt off her hand.

The pair were doing shots on a Thursday night. Late Thursday night in fact.

“I didn’t run,” Serena said with a scrunched up face.

She had just sucked on the lemon.

“Oh, no. Then what do you call it?”

Serena thought about it.

“Reviewing my options,”she nodded.

“***** coward.”

“What?!”

“What other options, Serena? You weren’t dating anyone. You weren’t going out to the clubs.”

“A club is not a place to meet my future whatever,” she said waving her hand.

“Alright, I’ll give you that,” Veronica shrugged, “But you don’t go out anywhere, Serena. You’re becoming an old maid at the ripe ‘ole age of 27.”

“***** you, Ronnie,” Serena threw at her best friend.

“We tried that, remember? And it didn’t work.”

The pair had stopped drinking, only because they were out of the tangy liquid.

“Look, I’m sorry. I’m only saying these things ’cause I love you, Serena. I want to see you happy. And Evan made you happy,” she said.

“Yeah, she did,” Serena sighed.

“Finally, you admit having feelings for the girl,” Veronica slapped Serena on the arm.

“Yeah, maybe.”

“So what are you going to do about it?” she asked smiling.

“Nothing.”

“Are you kidding me?” she scoffed.

“No.”

“May I ask why not?”

“It’s a complicated.”

“Love is complicated, I’ll give you that. But the first move isn’t.”

“Ronnie, why are you hounding me?” Serena cried.

“It kills me seeing my best friend unhappy. I want the best for you, Serena. And even though you may not think it, Evan is the best thing for you. She is the only one I’ve seen able to keep up with your changing moods.”

“That’s because she’s young,” Serena offered laughing.

“You know what, Serena? ***** you and your excuses.”

Veronica stood up and swayed to the left as she made her way down the hall to her bedroom.
