Bette steps forwards and smiles…
Bette: “hey daddy”
Melvin: “hello Elizabeth…how are you?”
Bette: “I’m good…how are you?”
Melvin: “I’m here to see another day…thanks to the lord”
Mom: “amen…glory to god”
Bette: “yeah…amen…”
Melvin: “Elizabeth”
Bette/Mom: yes…
Melvin: “my wife”
Mom: “yes baby”
Melvin: “whose that white woman in the corner?”
Mom: “don’t talk like that?”
Bette: “daddy!”
Tina steps forwards…
Tina: “no it’s fine…it’s no big deal… really…”
She extends her hand…
Tina: “hi…I’m Bette’s girlfriend Tina…Tina Kennard…”

Upstate New York…Hospital…Melvin’s room…
Sameday….
Melvin looks at Tina and he looks confused…
Melvin: “I beg your pardon”
Bette: “you heard what she said…”
Melvin looks at Bette…
Melvin: “how dare you bring her here when I look like this…how dare you!…”
Melvin raises his voice…This makes the women in the room jump…Tina places her hand to her side and looks down at the tiled floor…
Tina: “it’s not her fault Melvin-”
Melvin: “call me Mr. Porter”
Tina: “sorry Mr. Porter…but it was my idea to come here to see you…Bette didn’t have anything to do this with this…I’m sure if she would of known that your reaction to me being here would be so uncomfortable then she would of kept me at the house…”
Bette’s mother looks at Melvin and she doesn’t look happy at all…
Mom: “there’s no need to apologize honey…you didn’t do anything wrong..if anything by you coming here was a blessing and it was kind of you to give my daughter-”
She looks at Mevlin…
Mom: “and her family your support…Precious”
Bette: “yes”
Mom: “could you and Tina step out for a second…I need to talk to your father”
Bette: “sure…come on T”
Tina: “it was nice meeting you…”
Melvin doesn’t say anything…His eyes are glued to the semi gloss paint on the wall…This makes Bette angry and she and Tina exit the room leaving Melvin and his wife alone…
Mom: “who do you think you are?”
Melvin: “come on woman-”
Mom: “woman!”
Melvin: “sorry Elizabeth…but-”
Mom: “no buts in this one Melvin…you are to listen and listen closely you hear”
Melvin: “yes”
Mom: “don’t blame this hospital thing on Bette…this doesn’t have anything to do with her and you know it”
Melvin: “I’m sorry maybe there’s something I missed”
