My Skin is Painfully New – Chapter 9

“Yeah, no problem James, keep it as long as you need it, I’m not going anywhere today,” said Bette leaning into the passenger-side window of her Saab.

”Thanks Bette, I promise to take good care of her!” replied James, pulling slowly out of the driveway.

”Have fun,” Bette called after the car, “someone should,” she thought.

Bette entered the house which seemed especially dark in contrast to the bright sunshine outside. Part of Bette wanted to open the blinds and windows and let the darkness and stale air escape, but a stronger part wanted to brood in the darkness and inhale the stale air that matched the staleness of her life.

Bette kicked off her sandals and walked into the kitchen, looking at her reflection in the refrigerator. She saw a defeated face stare back at her. She’d lost. She’d lost and nothing mattered much anymore. Bette opened the refrigerator with the intent of looking for something to eat. She closed the door and wandered aimlessly around the kitchen opening and shutting cabinets without ever seeing what was inside. What’s the point, she thought to herself as she walked out of the room, her body as numb as her mind.

She painfully recalled the moment last night when she knew that she’d lost Tina. At the award ceremony she was surreptitiously studying Tina sitting next to Helena. The ease they had with each other was devastating to Bette, but worse was the physical affection they displayed. Every time Helena touched Tina, Bette’s heart bled a bit, but when Tina leaned in to accept a kiss from Helena, Bette’s heart hemorrhaged. The point of no return happened a bit later on in the evening when Bette witnessed Tina looking into Helena’s eyes and giving her “the Tina look”. Bette thought the Tina look was hers alone, never to be shared or experienced by another human being. The fact that Tina was giving it away so cavalierly drove home the point that Tina had moved on. Bette had lost.

Bette walked into the bedroom, wiping tears from her face, a gesture that was becoming habit for her. She put the Melissa Etheridge CD back on her Bose stereo, put the headphones on to block out the world and laid down on the bed and closed her eyes.

    2. Sorry for confusing some of you! Yes, you may have read this before. I posted this chapter late last year. It was the first fan fiction I’d ever attempted, and didn’t even think that I would develop it further. I then wrote the 8 chapters leading up to this segment. I posted this one again, because if I skipped it new readers might have been lost. Hope that clears it all up! Thanks for the wonderful comments! Maureen.

    3. Wow that was so beautiful. It was fun and sasy, and definatiely hot. However you really felt Bette’s loss and Tina’s confusion. Amazing and so well written.

    4. Readers, I think it was a stand alone piece originally and she has built this story around this piece. So now it has become one of many chapters. Horray for us! Awesome writing!
