Pete sat down, arranged his papers and then slowly turned to the defendant.
“You want me to represent you, I’ll represent you and you’ll pay damn well for that representation. I will say this once and one time only, so listen carefully. I don’t give a flying fuck about who you know, who you are or what connections you have. Get the message, by whatever means you have, through to whatever boys in the hood or street alley you know – to stay away from this courtroom, this case and anyone involved in it. Do you understand me? Do you have any problem understanding what I’m saying?”
“I don’t know what the fuck you’re talking…”
Pete’s hard and narrowed stare stopped the defendant’s words before he could finish his sentence.
Pete spoke in a slow and deliberate tone, and he did so within inches of the defendant’s face with each burst of air from the sternly enunciated words landing on the defendant’s skin. “Don’t fucking play dumb with me. I’ve been around the streets a lot longer than you. Get the word to the right people and get it to them tonight or you’ll be searching for a new attorney before your breakfast tomorrow is digested.”
The defendant swallowed and Pete saw the recognition in his eyes that there wasn’t any sense in arguing or debating the issue.
The jury entered the courtroom, entered the jury box and the Judge then resumed the bench.
“All right. Is everyone ready to continue?” the Judge asked looking first at the DA’s table and then at the Defense.
Tina rose. “Commonwealth is ready, your Honor.”
Pete, with a smile, rose also. “Defense is ready, your Honor.
The Judge turned to the DA’s table. “Call your next witness, Miss Kennard.”
Tina called her next witness, which was Detective Cavalli’s partner.
The whole day was spent on the examination of Detective Ryan Briscoe. Try as he might, Pete couldn’t shake Briscoe either. It may not have been as obvious to the jury because Pete was way too skilled as an interrogator and cross-examiner. Pete already knew this case was going to be a fight to the finish – but he also realized that Tina was rattled and when one is rattled, mistakes are made. Pete was cognizant of the stress Tina was under. He may be hard as nails, but he was still a human being with a family and those close to him. As much as he wanted to win this case, he didn’t want it won at the cost of any injury happening to someone Tina Kennard loved. The legal fighter in him was seeing the stress on her simply as giving him a small advantage. Although, something told him that Tina was going to rise above it.

This is great. Tina pops the question and Bette is shocked. I wish they were getting married on the show but they are not even together on the show. IC needs some tips from the masters. We worship you pen master. Ha Ha thanks for the story.

Oh man, you really left me hanging like falling off of cliff. I hope that you get to post soon. Most of all I hope that Bette will say yes and not allow Tina to think that she made a huge mistake. Besides they really do want to stay together and marriage is the best next step to make.

I’m really happy you are back with this delightful story, but I think it’s a little cruel of you to leave us with such a cliffhanger… Glad you’re tucked up cozily with your woman! So you’ll have lots of time to write now, won’t you?
The question becaome is was Bette’s offer to live together an offer to commit to a relationship with Tina, or to play house? I think that the warning letter threating Bette should have served as a reminder that live is and can be short with NO guarantees. Maybe Bette feels that things are moving too fast, but she needs to reasure Tina that she is serious about their relationship and them being together :o)

Acreextl, Wonderful, wonderful writing. You seem to inhibit this world and demonstrate the depth and completeness of Bette and Tina’s attraction to each other. Their hearts and souls may be intertwine however it can take some time for their heads to catch up. I know that this frightens Bette particularly given her childhood with Melvin and his numerous affair. Marriage is a sacred vow to Bette and she just needs some time to come to terms with the enormity of Tina’s proposal. Peter is fleshed out into the leach that he is but also as a rounded human being with doubts and concerns however their is also a desire to win and win at all costs so Tina had better be prepared for his slings and arrows. It is inspiring to have marriage as the answers to Tina worries. More please and make it soon. Thank you for dharing your talent and words with me. Your Loyal Fan.
