Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

    “So..”

His daughter gazed up as he had broken the wall of silence between them.

So. Unfinished. Hanging. Incomplete. Just like their conversation.

Swallowing a lump, Tina displayed the same problem with articulation as her old man.

“So?” She repeated, her voice just above a whisper.

Ken steeled himself. This was a difficult conversation, and he felt uncomfortable with it, but it was an important one to have. “So what do you think about it?”

“I think..” Tina started but then stopped. Ken saw a flash of bitterness and annoyance in her hazel eyes. “It doesn’t matter what I think, cause apparently, a decision has been made without consulting me.. or Bette.”

“Tina.” Ken sighed exasperatedly. His daughter sometimes had a tendency to see what she only wanted to see. And unfortunately for him, this was one of those days. “You’ve got it all wrong. I laid out options. Options. Not concrete decisions. I was asking, not telling.”

    “But,”

“Hear me out for a minute.” Ken interrupted her with a wave of a hand. “It’s always nice to have a choice. It opens up a lot of opportunities for you.” He said softly in an effort to reach out. “Even if you only have to choose between two.. or two hundred.. or two thousand, it doesn’t matter. Cause in the end, you’d choose only one and its your decision that will count.”

The teenager looked away. She could hear the desperation in his voice. This was hard for the both of them. She could take the self-serving path and hold on to her anger, or she could make it easy for the both of them and hear him out. Though she knew she could play the part of the angsty teenager very well, she found it increasingly hard to keep up the facade. So in the end, she gave in to what her heart was telling her was the right thing. “What.. what are my options again?” She gave in.

A small smile appeared on Ken’s face. Finally, there was some progress. Deep inside, he thanked his daughter for taking the huge and difficult step without putting up much of a fight. She was really starting to mature. “Option one,” He started, lifting up a finger. “You go to USC or any other school, Porter will lend you a private plane or a car or a boat any time you need it. He’s also offering to shoulder phone bills, computer bills and anything that involves communicating with Bette.” He lifted a second finger. “Option two, you go to Yale, Porter will sponsor your education and shoulder all your living expenses – from rent to utilities. He’s also offering up use of his jet so we could visit each other any time we want.”
