Just The Girl – Chapter Fifty Two (a HYD-inspired fic)

Shane nudged Alice as she and Bette stood up and walked towards the ledge. They leaned against the wood and gazed outside the huge window, watching their friend as she started doing their bidding. “Run, twirl and spit? Haven’t heard that one before. Where did you get that superstition?”

“I made it up.” Alice snickered.

    “You’re bad.”

    “Sick.” Bette nodded.

Their breath collectively hitched on their throat as Sam almost tripped and fell face first into the ground. They breathed again when their gullible friend managed to catch herself and resume her run.

    “Poor Sammy..”

    “Yeah..”

“Oh shut up. You guys are also enjoying this.”

Shane and Bette laughed. “We are..”

    ——————————-

    Saturday Morning. Kennard apartment.

Father and daughter regarded each other in careful silence. Both parties afraid to utter a single word after the big reveal. The girl, especially, felt as if a huge bomb had just been dropped on her lap. So what happens now? They slowly looked at one another and bit back a sigh. The young one, sitting on her bed, could only hug her otter stuffed toy to death – afraid that if she loosened her grip, she might lose her composure as well. Her father on the other hand, leaned back opposite her on the small study table, endangering the old thing with his weight.

Ken looked at the wall behind her, unable to meet Tina’s gaze any longer. He knew this would happen. He knew his little girl all too well and had envisioned days ago just how she will react to his news. That was one of the reasons why he waited until the end of exam week before speaking to her about it. He knew she would take it badly.

With tired and sleep-deprived eyes, he glanced at the time on his wristwatch.

Too much time had elapsed since someone had said the last word. In his daze, he couldn’t even remember who it was. All his pre-talk practice was useless cause during the crucial moment, his nervousness made him stutter and stumble like a bumbling idiot. For once, he wished that he was born with eloquence and the ability to say his thoughts without sounding like a fool like he did a while ago. That wish was badly needed to be fulfilled, for even now, when the need to speak arose, he could only manage to say one thing..
