Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Twenty Four, Part One (based loosely on HYD: Returns)

“Shane,” Bette looked at the girl. “You’re prone to seasonal loves. They come and go, some leave a mark, some barely leave a dent.” She motioned at the first glass. “All your weekly conquests falls under the ‘love for a season’ category. But Carmen,” She segued and tapped the second glass. “She’s your love for a reason. She’s greater than a seasonal love, but she’s not the one you’re destined to be with. She came in to your life for a reason; maybe to teach you some life lessons, I don’t know. For all you know, maybe she was there to help you realize that you’re capable of loving and hurting too.”

Bette sighed when she looked at the third glass. “And this one,” She started with a longing smile. “You haven’t met yours yet.” She told Shane. “But I already met mine.” She took the glass in her hands and looked down at it fondly. “A love for all seasons. The person that would complete your life. The one you’re fated to spend forever with.” She smiled sadly, thinking about her Tina. “And what you said a while ago Shane, you were right. Once you’ve met them, and loved them, don’t do anything stupid to drive them away.. cause like what you said..” She looked at her three friends and together..

“You don’t get over the love of your life.” The four girls chorused.

“So let’s drink to that.” Bette proposed, returning the rest of the glasses to her two friends. She raised her glass and so did the other girls. “To the girls we love, the girls we lost, and the ones we have to go through hell and back to get again.”

They clinked the glassware together before downing their drinks in one continuous, headache-inducing gulp.

There was still a cloud of gloom inside the room, but each girl would have to admit, that after that exchange, they could breathe a little more freely. And smiling, even a sad one, was getting easier to do.

“You know Shaney,” Alice gave her friend’s foot a gentle nudge under the table after everything had settled down. “You’re much more interesting when you’re drunk. I guess Master Yoda comes out in full force with some Johnny Walker huh?”
