Just The Girl 2.0 – Chapter Twenty Four, Part One (based loosely on HYD: Returns)
The rest of the girls stared at Alice.
“What?” The clueless blonde asked.
Bette snorted and rolled her eyes. “Jilted Lovers 101, much? Al, just because your first love issued a restraining order against you doesn’t mean that everyone else is bitter about theirs.”
“No shit.” Sam smirked, taking a sip from her drink. She smiled slyly at the blonde. “You’re not going to goad Shane into burning an effigy of Carmen out in the backyard like you did when you got dumped by Lisa, are you? Cause let me tell you, that shit takes the cake.” Sam chuckled. And despite their black mood, Bette and Shane did as well.
Embarrassed by the memory, Alice pouted and gave Sam the finger.
“Speaking of shit..” Bette followed up. “We should stop drinking this crap.” She sighed, lifting the bottle of scotch and examining it up close. “Do you guys notice that every time we do, one of us starts acting all emotional and mopey and bitter?”
“Word.” Alice sighed, cringing at the memory of one of them blubbering their eyes out in a crowded bar. It was her.
“And Shane,” Bette turned to her somber friend. “Since we’re torturing ourselves here, did Kennard ever tell you guys about the three kinds of love a person encounters in his or her lifetime?”
“Nope.”
“Same here.” Alice echoed.
“And here.” Sam piped in.
“I’ll tell you guys. Or better yet, I’ll just show you,” Bette started, feeling lightheaded at the thought that she was about to share something to her friends that she and Tina had talked about during one of their many heartfelt talks in the middle of the night. But it was something she felt like doing; who knows, maybe it would help. With purposeful movements, she placed Alice’s, Sam’s and her own glass at the middle of the table and positioned them side by side. Carefully, she started refilling them one by one. Her three friends watched her every move with curious intensity, wondering what she had in store. Done with the task, Bette looked at the three and exhaled loudly before speaking. “Three glasses. Signifying the three kinds of love we experience in our lives.” She began. She pointed at the first glass. “A love for a season.” And the second glass. “A love for a reason.” And lastly, the third. “And a love for all seasons.”
