    Tina struggles with how to tell Bette a monumental secret.

    “Oh, no problem,” Tina smiled understandingly. Bette turned back to her sauce, stirring in some fresh oregano. “I’m not that hungry either,” Tina said to Bette’s back, standing awkwardly in the middle of the kitchen.  Not hungry? That was an understatement. Nerves had evaporated any trace of hunger she may have felt on the drive home. As if on cue, Tina’s stomach growled in protest, belying the words she had just spoken. She supposed that she had to eat something for the baby.

    The baby. Tina felt like squealing with joy for one wild moment, but she squelched the desire and tried to concentrate on the task at hand. Maybe she should just casually mention it, repeat aloud the thought she had just had, and then Bette would know and be happy, and make her sit with her feet propped up while she fed her sloppy mouthfuls of spaghetti…

    “I suppose I should eat something,” she started off, pausing for breath. “For the –“

    “Angie, put that DOWN,” Bette said firmly. “Right now, give it to me.” Bette held out her arm, using the no-nonsense voice that Angie knew by now to obey quickly and quietly. The toddler handed over the wooden spoon she had been using as a drumstick to beat the glass front of the stove with.

    “And get out from under my legs before I spill something on you,” Bette groused, casting an annoyed glance at Angelica, whose eyes had gone enormous and sad. “Tina, would you get her?”

    “Sure,” Tina said meekly. She scooped Angelica up and dipped her backwards in an awkward tango move that took Angelica by surprise and brightened her mood instantly. She took Angelica to the bathroom to wash up for dinner and sat her down in her high chair. Taking a deep breath, she breezed back into the kitchen to get the items to set the table with. Bette’s back was still turned to her as she pulled freshly-made garlic bread out of the oven and started cutting it and placing it in a basket she had set out.

    Tina didn’t want to blurt it out anymore, sensing that tonight was not the right time to break this news. Bette swished out of the kitchen with the bread. Tina followed, clutching the plates and the utensils in her hands, hoping in vain that an opportunity would present itself over dinner to make it easier, but Tina already knew that there wouldn’t be one.

    6. this Bette sounds like the “old Bette” and Tina sounds like the “old Tina” why is that???? Hmmmmm. What is Tina so fearful of??? and Bette she needs to get more focused on her family and attentive!!! PPS

    8. Geeze…this is their second time around…don’t tell me it’s a repeat of this again…have they learned nothing? Why would Bette not be happy…she obviously wanted another baby, she did the insemination?

    11. Ruh-roh, Tina’s not gonna be able to keep that secret much longer, is she now? Maybe hurling in the kitchen sink isn’t a glaring enough hint for Bette… Tina should maybe start an impromptu knitting session… booties and onesies and a wee pastel-colored blankie… (whilst dinner gets cold and uneaten of course…) Yeah. Tina needs to tell Bette. And Bette had so better not fly off the handle in the inimitable Porter style. Post soon, please? Thanks!

    12. i can’t see why tina is so nervous… bette was there… so its not like a shock… she should just tell tell… i’m sure bette will be very happy
