    Chapter I

Tina gave Angelica several strong pushes, watching with absurd pride as her daughter bent and extended her legs, swinging nearly too high, her silhouette blocking the orange setting sun from Tina’s vision for a moment each time she swung back and forth. Tina collapsed into the swing next to her daughter, exhausted. They were on a quiet stretch of beach up the coast. It had been a long drive, so Tina had decided to stop for a bit, and let Angelica expend some energy before they got home. Hopefully the girl would be too tired from the journey and this detour to rip and run around the house like usual when they got home. This was just a little playtime reward because Angelica had been so well-behaved all day.

Tina began to lazily swing a little herself, glancing at her watch. They’d be home shortly. She had to start thinking about how to break the news to Bette. The doctor had been cheerful and efficient, full of assurances that everything was just as it should be at this stage. A disquiet thought had been plaguing Tina all day, in spite of what she knew to be true. Unwelcome memories from the early weeks of her last pregnancy kept popping into her mind.

She had been alone then, hurting so much and so desperate at times that she had been terrified of how her persistently dark moods would affect her baby. She had been so tortured by the disintegration of her relationship with Bette; she didn’t think that she would ever get over it.

She had gotten over it, helped in large part by the life growing inside of her day by day, helping her to find some much needed perspective in those days.

The best and worst time of my life. Tina thought, smiling sadly. She had forgiven Bette, of course, and been forgiven. She was content never to think of that time again. Now though, Tina realized that it still pained her that the months before Angelica’s birth had been a time of such sadness and drama. She sent up a silent, simply worded prayer to Whomever might be listening that this pregnancy would be comparatively peaceful.

“Mommy, go high!” Angie cried, encouraging her mother to put the swing she was sitting on to some use. The toddler looked at her mother, a little perplexed for a moment when she still didn’t move in spite of her command, before facing forward again, content to swing solo.

    1. this Bette sounds like the “old Bette” and Tina sounds like the “old Tina” why is that???? Hmmmmm. What is Tina so fearful of??? and Bette she needs to get more focused on her family and attentive!!! PPS

    2. Geeze…this is their second time around…don’t tell me it’s a repeat of this again…have they learned nothing? Why would Bette not be happy…she obviously wanted another baby, she did the insemination?

    3. Ruh-roh, Tina’s not gonna be able to keep that secret much longer, is she now? Maybe hurling in the kitchen sink isn’t a glaring enough hint for Bette… Tina should maybe start an impromptu knitting session… booties and onesies and a wee pastel-colored blankie… (whilst dinner gets cold and uneaten of course…) Yeah. Tina needs to tell Bette. And Bette had so better not fly off the handle in the inimitable Porter style. Post soon, please? Thanks!

    4. i can’t see why tina is so nervous… bette was there… so its not like a shock… she should just tell tell… i’m sure bette will be very happy
