“So help me Sammy, if you ever do that again, it will be the last thing you do.”
“Bette, I’ve missed you.” I was really getting uncomfortable with this and started looking for Dana.
“Sammy, go away. It’s been months since I’ve seen or thought of you.” Bette looked like if she could, she would crawl under the table.
“Bette, why don’t we go back to my place and catch up.” This woman had some nerve. I was tired of her. Without thinking, I reached out and took Bette’s hand. Her head shot up when she felt my hand make contact with hers.
“Sammy, I don’t know you but I don’t appreciate you so rudely interrupting my date with Bette. If you’re done, I would very much like to go back to enjoying being here with Bette.” She looked from me to Bette and couldn’t help but notice my holding Bette’s hand and caressing the back of her hand with my thumb. I almost wanted to kiss Sammy to thank her for such an unexpected treat.
She looked defeated as she walked off. I unlaced my hands from Bette’s and smiled.
“Sorry about that. I was just trying to help.”
“Please don’t apologize. Sammy was one of those mistakes that just won’t go away. Thank you for rescuing me.”
“Are there a lot of those mistakes?” I asked before I could catch myself. As I heard it come out of my mouth, I immediately started to apologize.
“That’s a fair question. Yes there are. Well too many anyway. I seriously took being single to heart and enjoyed myself. It’s not something that I’m proud of but I do have a reputation from my past. It’s not the me of today but it’s something that is hard to get away from.”
Every thought that came to mind was in the role of a therapist not a possible friend so I sat there quietly for a minute to think. “Bette, we all have a past of some type.”
“I can bet yours is a lot tamer than mine but you’re right, we all do. I can’t change the past so I don’t try. I just try not to repeat it.”
Alice and Dana came back to the table giggling and whispering to one another. I saw Dana hand Alice her phone and a few seconds later, get it back. She leaned over and told me she was way drunk and should leave before she made a total fool of herself. Since I wasn’t too far behind her, I agreed. I looked at Bette and smiled at her. “If it means anything, I like the you of today.” That made her smile.
We said our goodbyes. Alice obviously was drunk or a hugger because she pulled me into a big hug right after releasing Dana from one. Dana and Bette acknowledged having met one another. I leaned into Bette and whispered so only she could hear, “Maybe August 23 doesn’t need to be our target date.” I walked away with Dana close behind. When I turned, Bette winked at me and I knew I would see her sooner rather than later. I was so ok with that.

excellent! I love the stilted convo, love that dana is now part of the gang, love that they want to try sooner rather than later… Cannot wait for the first date!

Two months did seem a long time, but in one sense it was about right. I am glad that they ran into each other if only for Dana and Alice to meet. Now at least Tina is rethinking the August 23rd time line.
Good thing Bette and Tina ran into each other and had such a good time talking. I for one think a month is more than enough time to wait before getting together for a date ir just getting to know each other. PPS

I love how you intergrated Dana into the story. It will be interesting to read their coming out adventures. I’m on the edge of my seat waiting for Bette and Tina have a proper date. Great update.

Oh my goodness I just had the day/evening from hell and to find this story, then read it was such a welcome treat!!! Well if it were in a work situation, I’d probably be freaking out if the target date got pushed up, but in this situation…oh who am I kidding, I’m freaking out now too – but in a good way…this is SO awesome, can’t wait for that phone call ;)

at first when i read your intro.. i was pissed… oh no she had tina meet another woman… but so glad it was dana… and now maybe alice and dana will hook up… it sure looks that way… and i am also glad tina said what she said… now bette can call her when tina sleeps off her hangover she will be having in the morning… love this story… PPS
