    Driving — Chapter 28

“I don’t know,” Tina said into her cell phone.

“Are you coming back to LA?”
    “I think so.”

    “Together?”

    “I don’t know.”

Alice was getting frustrated. She wanted answers and details about what was happening between Bette and Tina in Taos and Tina had no answers. Tina knew what she was doing to her friend, and she didn’t mean to hurt her feelings, but part of her really didn’t know the answers to those questions and part of her wanted to leave LA far away in her mind where it had been for the last few days.

Tina looked up to see Bette walking toward the table. She was talking on her phone, too.
“Al, I gotta go, Bette’s here. Talk to you later, I promise, bye.”
Bette was standing next to the table, but she didn’t sit down.

“No, I’ll tell Franklin myself. If Mason calls, tell him I’m out of town,” she glances at Tina “on a family matter and I’ll call him when I get back. Oh, and e-mail me the revenue report when you get it. Thanks. Ok. Bye.”

“Hey, how was yoga?” Tina asks as she pours Bette a cup of coffee from the pot in the center of the table.

    “Nice. How was your swim?”

    “I liked last night’s better.”

Bette eye’s meet Tina’s and she smiles. She takes a sip of her coffee.

“You look happy,” Tina says. “Did James have good news?”

“James did have good news. We’re getting a new board member – Mason Hatch. He’s a wealthy, *****, art-loving lawyer I met a few weeks ago and I asked him to join the board. He’s just what we need.”

    “Great.”

“Yeah,” Bette looked across the table. “But that’s not the only reason I’m happy. Last night with you, seeing you now, that makes me happy, T.”

Tina smiled. There was a sense of ease between them this morning that she was feeling and enjoying too.

    8. I love the sense I get from your story of observing a mature passion between two grown women (not girls).

It’s always well drawn, always well realized. You share with SNS the ability to convey a definite sense of place. I am there in Taos with them, moment by moment, feeling every varying emotion.

My comments feel inadequate to the task of praising the excellence of your work.
