Driving – – Chapter 27
The air between Bette and Tina hung heavy and silent. The kiss that had ignited them and led them to the bed was a memory, and the potential for passion had passed. Bette had worried about Tina’s expectations and how she could exceed them. Tina had held the memory of Bette’s betrayal in her mind. Try as they might, they could not free themselves from their own thoughts enough to be open and trusting. Cues were mis-read and timing was out of synch. Lower? Higher? Faster or slower? Maybe less, or maybe, not at all.
When they gave up Bette felt humiliated and Tina felt heartsick. Bette thought it was worse than the periods of unintentional abstinence they had been through. During those times they just hadn’t started anything, so nothing happened. Here they had tried to start something and nothing happened. Much worse. Furthermore, she remembered the last, regrettable encounter she’d had with Candace and how her mind had prevented her body from functioning sexually and Jesus, what if she was in the middle of a ***** crisis? Not wanting to do it and not being able to do it were very different. But that was Candace and this was Tina – how could it be?
Bette was miserable. She wanted to get up desperately but she didn’t want Tina to think she was running away from her. Tina, lying with her back to Bette, wanted to get up too. She was wrapped in the sheet and she wished it were her clothes. She was fighting the impulse to flee the room and just keep going. She knew she owed Bette an apology though, and a good-bye.
When they had endured their personal torments as long as possible, they spoke, at the same time, then fell silent.
Bette sighed. “I’m sorry,” she said, trying to keep her voice from expressing too much of the frustration that she felt.
“No,” Tina said immediately. She turned onto her back and looked up at the ceiling but not at Bette. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry I initiated something that we weren’t ready for.”

Thanks for continuing this story. It is one of my very favorites.
I guess I should be glad you don’t post more often, else I’d get hyperbolic anxiety trying to suppress my slavish praise.
I guess I should be glad. But I’m not!
Love this story.
It’s a fave of mine also. So glad you are back.
Eek – the format! Sorry folks, I’ll try to fix it asap.

Beautiful chapter, I hope you continue and SOON.
If I could I’d free you from all the writer’s blocks you feel
Give you courage because your writing is so real
Yes, I would, if I could. (Dont’ hurt me, Regina)
Your imagery is so beautiful. Thanks for sharing it with us. That scene in the pool was stunning!
Thanks for adding another beautiful chapter. Please post soon… :p
Hello Massmom: It is such a treat to see this wonderful story back up for all of us who has missed it dearly. I loved how they ended their night in that calming and sensual water. “Desert Hearts.” Ah yes one of my favorites. I am hoping that we will soon see another update. Excellent as always.
This is wonderful!
Ahhh. Every chapter a gift. Always miss you when you’re gone, always appreciate it when you’re back. Thanks so much for continuing.
AHhh Massmom, my heart strings are being tugged so hard right now. The way you tell them is so moving. I love how Tina is leading in her halting way and how Bette is following. You get the feeling the Bette would follow Tina anywhere. Thanks for this chapter I know how writing this can be such an effort. It is so appreciated here. Thanks
Great to have you back! this is a great update….thank you
I think I’m going to have to see Desert Hearts again because I missed the reference. If I had to guess, it would be Tina returning the beers to the guys??? It’s been a long time since I’ve drooled over the desert women….
Glad you were able to write this chapter. The emotions are raw and true. You are able to take the characters we all know, put them in a place we don’t know, and we still recognize these women because your portrayal is so authentic! Yeah Massmom!
I missed you and this story. I’m not a writer but I do understand the concept of writer’s block. Hope you’ve been able to over come it b/c I’d love to see where this story goes.
Bittersweet. Good though. I missed your posts. I hope you’ll be able to post again soon.
