“That may be Helena but Kelly hasn’t forgotten. Whatever you said to her that night made her think that you too had it in for Bette. We know Jodi wanted revenge because she thinks Bette stalled her career and Kelly’s holding a grudge because of unrequited love. What’s your story?” Martha asked the question Peggy was dreading the most.
“What do you mean what’s my story?” Helena didn’t like that the spotlight was on her. She knew what they were asking but she was buying time to decide how forthcoming she would be. It was about to get very uncomfortable.
“What did you have against Bette that made Kelly believe you’d go along with her and Jodi’s plan to hurt her?” Martha asked succinctly so there was no question of misunderstanding.
“I never said I was going along with any plans. Kelly didn’t even tell me what the plan was.” Helena defended her actions.
“But you admit you have something against her? What is it?” Helena noticed that Martha had taken over Peggy’s interrogation tactics and wasn’t showing as much compassion as before. She realized that under the circumstances it was in her best interest to be completely truthful. It was also her chance to get some things off her chest that had been weighing down pretty heavily on her heart for the past week or so.
“I suppose I’ve been jealous of Bette ever since my mother first mentioned her years ago when they met. It’s gotten worse over the years as they’ve grown closer. I felt like my mother traded up for a better model in a daughter. It was hard enough to live up to her expectations but it became impossible when I was constantly being compared to ‘perfect’ Bette Porter.”
“Helena you have to know that is not true.” Peggy jumped to her own defense.
“I’m sorry mother but Martha wanted to know what I have against Bette …”
“Helena, our relationship problems have absolutely nothing to do with Bette. You and I have been at odds ever since you were a child. It was never my intention to replace you or trade up with Bette as you put it. I always considered Bette as my second daughter. You were always my first and nothing has made me happier than to see you two getting along as you are now.” Peggy was hurt to know that she was part of the reason Helena had been drawn into this conspiracy.

I was just completing and sending my comment from the last chapter when I discovered this new chapter. So happy that Bette told Tina about her history. It is important that they have nothing between that would affect their lives in the future. Its great that Tina is mature enough and sure of herself to understand all that has transpired in Bettes’ life and still be able to love and share in their love and future plans. All these negative things have changed and colored Bettes’ life in a significant way and now Tina understands the nuances that makes Bette the woman that she has become yet still love her to the bone. Wonderful chapter. Thanks for posting.
Also happy that helena seems to have redeemed herself with her mother. I just hope she carries through and not warn those two hellish bitches of their impending doom. Can hardly wait to see what happens next. Enjoying these chapters so much. Thanks.
Dang BAT!! It’s hard trying to catch up with your story as you post faster than I can read your chapters but you are doing such an excellent job even if I haven’t commented in a few chapters!
I love that Bette is fully opening up and trusting Tina enough to share her history with Jodi as it gives Tina a better understanding of how that has been a part of what has shaped Bette into the woman she is. I love how you have Tina so supportive of Bette and sure of where she is in Bette’s life now. Helena seems to be showing some redeeming qualities and that’s good to see and of course I just love your Peggy in this story. Kelly and Jodi really don’t stand a chance with Peggy looking out for things

It was really great to see that Helena honestly told the story, and she regretted what she had done. the change in the behavior of Helena is the most positive thing for me. I hope to stay that way!
I’m very glad to Bette, was able to honestly say Tina, what did Jodie. Tina supportive, loving and compassionate behavior was the best.
Overall, it was a wonderful chapter.

Thanks BAT, it was a profound chapter and so well written. I loved the way you handled the conversation between Helena and the two moms and how mature she had become in being honest with herself and Peggy. Sometimes words do need to be said in order for healing to take place.
I also love the place where Tina and Bette are in their relationship in being open and honest with one another. Relationships are hard and do take lots of work to be the best they can be. I have a good feeling that Bette and Tina are well on their way to that kind of relationship.
