Cool of the Afternoon (Time of Day 8)

Dammit? What was she saying to me?

She’d take me, in whatever state of hideousness I’d confessed to. Take any day over the safe, boring man. Any day. Me. She’d have me.

And then she spoke to me of Jodi. How I’m running from Jodi.

She diverted the discussion. Played me. Am I still making her run from me?

I suppose that’s why I shot back with the talk of Kate Arden. She feigned disinterest.

    I know her too well.

She said she was hot. She was interested in a woman. A woman who’s not me.

We sat there, and I was thinking of Jodi.

Tina was there. Talking to me. Telling me things that, at that moment, I didn’t hear.

Telling me how much she hated to see the two of us together. How hard it was to see us together.

    So many words, signals.

Dammit, she was inviting me in. And there I was, so self-absorbed, I missed it all.

Tina’s arm around me. Now that I think of it. I think of her, and I think of Jodi.

Jodi does have so much. She’s interesting. Exciting. Smart.

But she’s also unknown on so many levels. She’d offered to compromise for me, and then she said that I was too controlling for her. What was that? I tried to connect, and she wasn’t there for me, wouldn’t respond.

I tried to talk to Tom about it, but he was just a bitch.

    Now, here I am, alone.

And I should be thinking of Jodi, right? Fixated on Jodi?

What the hell was Tina telling me?

Why the hell can’t I hear Tina when she talks?

She was talking to me, of us. Of the things that she missed about me, about us.

Yet again, I blew her off. Wrapped up into myself.

Thinking back, Tina’s arm was around me. She’s been doing that, recently. Finding reasons to make contact. To hug me. To touch me.

    Why can’t I hear Tina?

I know Tina better than anyone. Better than I know myself. Tina knows me better than I know myself.

    1. There were so many possibilities in that scene, missed opportunities. But you captured the moment right in this chapter. Thank you for travelling the road of hope with us, very nice and enjoyable chapter.

    2. “I can be hideous, still.” Bette’s self-loathing is heartbreaking. An exquisitely written chapter. The rhythms and simplicity of the prose . . . just wonderful.

    3. And it didn’t have to be overly-descriptive to drive the point home which is that this was hot and just plain erotic. Sadly, Bette’s in her head overthinking stuff like funnyone said.

    4. Yes! Of course she can do right! See, it’s all very simple: Right=Tina; Right=/=Jodi. Do right, Bette. Glad to be of service. Thanks for the post, pseud.

    5. That was a great post and thanks so much for writing what we are all thinking and feeling and hoping for. Funnyone is right, Bette is overthinking this. Jodie needs to leave and let Bette and Tina get on with their lives and family. Great post.

    6. Keep hope alive! Keep hope alive! Thank you for keeping the B&T hope alive! Seeing your work here is like a return to the old days, when B&T love and TLW were new. May S4 inspire many of the previous authors to return and the newer authors to flourish!
