    Long Way Home 4 (TLW/BG x-over)

“Helena, I’m just saying that Catherine, despite what you believe, is not good for you.” Alice motioned for a server to come over to the table, and placed an order for a refill on her coffee.

“Thanks Alice.” Despite the words, Helena’s tone indicated that she really was not grateful for the opinion of her friend. In fact, the topic of this conversation was beginning to make Helena wonder why she had accepted Alice’s invitation for a late lunch at The Planet at all.

“If it’s just a type, we can find you another. Look, over there.” Alice nodded her head, not so discretely, towards a tall woman with short black hair who was sitting alone, reading a book. “She’s sort of the type.”

Helena followed Alice’s gesture. “Oh my God.”

“What?” Alice turned to look at the woman more directly. “She’s not so bad. If I wasn’t, well, you know, sort of involved and all that.”

“No, it’s not that. I know that woman.”

“Really? I suppose that’s not so unusual, all things considered.”

“No, I know that woman from London.”

“Okay, less usual. Narrowing the realm of possibility.” Alice agreed. “But not impossible.”

“It’s either the woman I know, or it’s her twin. But it can’t be.”

“Can’t be that you see people you know even if they’re from England?” Alice dumped a packet of sugar into her coffee. “I always see people I know. Sometimes they’ve even moved to Ohio or something, but they return from time to time.”

“Alice, the woman I’m thinking of is in England. And in prison.”

“Oh.” That stopped Alice for a longer pause than usual, but couldn’t totally derail her from the conversation. “There’s always the theory that everyone has a twin.”

“I suppose,” Helen agreed. “But she seems so bloody similar.”

    “Well?” Alice prompted.

“Well?” Helena wasn’t quite sure the implication of the word.

    “Go ask her.”

“I am not going to go ask her.”

“Okay. Then I guess it’s my job.”

Before Helena could ask her friend to stop, Alice had popped out of her chair and tried to casually walk by the woman.

    1. That’s right, forget the awkwardness, ignore it, don’t deal with it. Push it to the back and let it grow and mutate instead. Hopefully, what results isn’t the shambling monstrosity of mutual alienation that it could so easily become. On another note, what did Helena do, prior to her lobotomy, to make Mlle. Jailbird Anglaise despise her so? I’m intrigued, so of course you’ll have to continue, pseud. Thanks for the update.

    2. Owwweeee, there is so much underlining tension between those two. I know that Bette wants Tina and I would bet my life that Tina wants Bette back. They just have to figure out how to get back onto the same road and going in the same direction. Thank goodness for Alice.
