Chapter XXIX – Empire State of Mind – Tho’ much is taken, much abides
”And you look …. dressed to kill!” Rose exclaimed again, holding Tina at arm’s length, looking at her up and down. ”You planning to surprise Bette tonight?”
Tina waggled her eyebrows and winked at Rose. ”Uh, huh. Where is she? Do you know?” she asked.
”She was in the far corner of the hall when I left the party about 5 or 7 minutes ago. Surrounded by a few new board members, I think. All women, by the way,” Rose answered.
”Oh?” Tina asked with one eyebrow raised.
”I understand this restores the balance of the board to an equal number of men and women,” Rose said, shrugging, and then glanced at her watch. ”I’m sorry, Tina, I have to get going. Alana’s driving in from New Haven, and will spend the night … so…”
”Of course, Rose. Do say Hi to Alana for us,” Tina said quickly. ”Do you need a ride?”
”No, but thanks for asking, Tina,” Rose answered, moving away as she spoke. ”Alana’s meeting me in the bar a few blocks from here. We may a grab a drink, and then head to my place.”
They blew each other air kisses, and went their separate ways.
Tina got to the top floor and slipped past the glass doors. She looked around quickly: the dinner part of the gathering was clearly over, and guests were now relaxing over after-dinner drinks and coffee.
After exchanging greetings with a few people who’d recognized her as she walked around, Tina walked to one end of the hall and got herself a drink from the impromptu bar that had been up for the gathering. She made her way to a corner table and laid down the glass of gin-and-tonic she’d been sipping. Almost immediately she felt a toned pair of arms encircle her waist from behind and draw her close to a familiar warm core.
”How could you have talked to half the people in this room before I even got to catch a glimpse of you?,” Bette whispered in husky low tones into her ear.
”Half the people?” Tina asked in jest, relaxing into the embrace. She automatically exposed more of her neck when she felt Bette nibble on the upper curve of an ear.

What a mess, that whole sniper attack, thank god that Diana seems to survive it.

Great update. I can sense Miller is going to be trouble for Bette and Tina. In your next update, I hope you answer a question I have about Miller. If Tina originally knew Miller as Georgina Keller, a stock-broker in London, during her university years, how did TIna recognize her as “Cam Miller” in the hospital? I sense another sub-story there.
You’re right! (Minx) Answers to these and other ?s shortly when I post the last chapter in a way that I hope puts a neat bow around the whole package.
Happy New Year and welcome back. As always I am intrigued by your storybook. I am glad to see that 15 years later Bette and Tina still carry the fire of love. I know that when they had taken on the welfare of the gold and it would take a toll on them, their family and friends. Did it cost them their child? You only mentioned Angelica in the update. Poor Jackson never seemed to recover. I know that our heroines understood the risk of being guardians but did they realize the heavy cost? Can’t wait for the next update. Thank for continuing to entertain us. We are very grateful that you share your talent with us .
