Chapter VI – Empire State of Mind – Three letters

Bette offered her one of the water cups that she was holding, and returned her small smile with one of her own.

“Are you and Tina …” Jolene started to ask, as she accepted the cup of water offered.

Bette nodded, taking a sip from the other glass she was holding. She decided to keep silent. She respected Jolene enough to know that the smartly-dressed gallerist wasn’t given to platitudes, and did not seem the type to accept advice unless she asked for it.

“It’s just so hard, Bette,” Jolene sighed, and then sagged against the wall, clutching her forehead with one hand. “Maybe we’re going about this all wrong.”

Bette reached out to lightly rub the other woman’s shoulder, as if communicating through her touch a friend’s sympathy. She asked softly, “What’s so hard, Jolene? Going through with the insemination?”

Jolene shook her head slightly, and then looked up at Bette. Up ‘til this point she only knew Bette socially, but she’d admired from afar the beautiful brunette’s sense of integrity and uncompromising approach to life, which she’d sensed in the few conversations they’d had, and from what she’d picked up from others who knew Bette better.

She decided to open up to her. “Umm … no… not just the insemination.”

She took another sip of water, then continued, “I feel like we’ve hit this rut, and maybe, unconsciously we’re hoping that getting pregnant could help us get out of it.”

Bette pursed her lips as she listened to Jolene.  The gallerist began to vocalize things that she’d clearly been thinking about for some time.  “I guess the thing we fear most, and that we just can’t talk about … is .. pardon me for being so blunt… sex. Maybe it’s LBD.”

The statement hung in the air between them.

Bette knew from experience that this was one of the toughest topics to discuss, even between the closest of friends. She reflected that she and Tina had never discussed the dry spell that had befallen them after shortly after moving to New York, with anyone, except Dan.

Bette was thinking that she was prepared to discuss anything but that with Jolene, when the gallerist chuckled lightly, “I didn’t mean to talk your ear off, Bette. TMI, huh?”

    1. Ahhhh, just ask Marcus then the kids are really siblings! I like this story very much only wish you posted more often, I have no right to talk I have been pondering a new story for quite some time so you take all the time you need to keep up the quality. My story will be centered around the horse world which is the world I lived in before I had the stroke. I spent many years showing and breeding Appaloosa’s first and then paint horses I miss being able to ride and having horses the most. I have been thinking about doing this story for a long time. I will start it soon. In the meantime I will read whatever you write.,

      • Allons-y! Jackiee1. Hope you do return to the “horse world.” They’re magnificent animals. About what you’re writing: If it helps, just start with a barebones outline, so that you have a “straw man” you can play with. It’s also something that doesn’t need to be perfect. At times, you could be tempted to be your own worst critic. Don’t be. (Hmmm… I posted 2 chapters this weekend: not good enough? just kidding). Hang in there.

    2. Love this story and the addition of Diane and Jules. Glad to see they are working on a second child and Bette can experience Tina during pregnancy. They will need to be careful who they choose as donor. Hope this upcoming trip is safe and uneventful. Of course that wouldn’t be fun then, would it? Thanks so much for your time in writing this wonderful story and sharing with us.

    3. I also love this story! Why not just ask Marcus to deposit again. That’s the right thing to do if he’s still in their lives. I’m not feeling Tom for some reason. Please let Bette find out the truth in Luxembourg but not to much drama. PPS

    4. Two posts in one week and both wonderful additions to this exceptional creativity. makes me wish it was a three day holiday weekend so that I could have all the time to read each word, digest and contemplate the creative imagery you have put forth. Thank you, keep up the wonderful work. The imagery between Bette creating life with Tina alone will set all screens on fire.

    5. Thanks for the double post. Bette and Tina don’t know Tom well or his history. Maybe Tina can surprise Bette by searching for Marcus and getting him to be their donor again. They should not mess with perfection, Angie is a gorgeous child.

    6. Hi Skydancer

I think with Toms sperm and Bettes eggs with Tina as the birth mother would make the perfect match.
I admire your creativity with each chapter, keep up the good work.
