But on the inside, in her head and heart, she sometimes felt like the same kid in the car on the way home from tennis camp- scared, heartbroken, and confused.

It was almost two months ago Dana and Lara had broken up. Other than a completely out of character drunken night with one of Shane’s friends named Melanie, Dana had not thought of pursuing a relationship with anyone. Even when Melanie had suggested that they could have a relationship and that she could handle being with a closeted woman.

Yeah, right. Where have I heard that one before?

No, the athlete had decided, the next relationship I have will have to be an open one. It’s not fair to ask anyone to share this stupid closet with me.

That settled, Dana knew intellectually that the first step had to be telling her family, but the thought of seeing their disappointed faces caused such a panic in the brunette, she knew she wasn’t ready to tell them. This all just left her in a state of limbo.

Her friends were of mixed opinions of the matter. The only thing they had agree upon was that Lara was a bitch for cheating on Dana and that no matter how much the brunette tried to take any of the blame, it all really laid on Lara.

Jamie had bluntly told Dana to tell her parents arguing that they loved her and this would not change anything in the long run. Yeah, they maybe upset at first but it would not change how they felt about her.

Tina’s suggestion had been along similar lines, that Dana should come out to her parents sooner rather than later, saying the longer she waited the harder it was going to be.

Bette, ever the practical one, had somewhat echoed Harrison’s sentiments, saying ultimately it came down to what was going to make Dana happier in the long run. If Dana felt that being out would hurt her chance of going pro then maybe she should wait.

Shane had simply shrugged while lighting her cigarette saying that Dana would come out either when something or someone gave her a bit of motivation or when she felt too cramped. Either way, it would be the athlete’s decision only.

Alice had been somewhat surprising with her response. Dana had expected her friend to joke and tell her to stop being such a “pussy so she could get some pussy” as she had told her on numerous other occasions. But the blonde just put her arm around Dana’s shoulder and offered to go with her when Dana did decides to talk to her parents, whether it was the next day or two years down the road.

 No matter how you sliced it, the ball was in Dana’s court but she was not ready to make a move.
