a lesson learned- a christmas story

I ran over and scooped her into my arms.

“Why did you walk off like that? I was scared to death that I lost you,” I said shaking her.

    “Sorry.”

“Sorry isn’t going to cut it. I thought someone took you. Do you know how much that frightened me? I thought I would never see you again.”

“Don’t frighten the child, Tina,” my mother came to stand beside me.

    I looked at her.

“Don’t ruin her chance to see the bearded man,” she said pointing to the fat man who sat up front in a king’s chair.

“Don’t you ever scare me like that again,” I said to Evan hugging her to my chest.

    “Mom, I can’t breathe.”

“Tina, dear, you’re cutting off the child source of living,” my mother patted on my back.

    I raised up.

“I’m sorry, Mommy,” Evan apologized with big wet chocolate eyes.

“Don’t think giving me those eyes will let you off the hook,” I warned.

“Oh let her be. It’s Christmas,” my mother advised.

    “Thanks, Grandma. Sorry, Mrs. Kennard.”

Evan and I both waited for my mother reaction. She surprised me.

“I like Grandma better,” she smiled.

We came into the house with me carrying a sleeping Evan and my mother carrying a few bags.

“I see someone was tucked out by today’s events,” my father laughed.

    “If you only knew, Daddy.”

“I’ll help you with her,” Bette offered taking Evan from my arms.

“I guess I’ll call it a night then,” my father replied.

    “Good night, Eaton,” Bette said.

    “Good night, Elizabeth.”

    “Good night, Mrs. Kennard.”

“Please, Elizabeth, call me Josie and good night,” she smiled.

    “I’ll be right up, babe.”

I turned to my father and hugged him. And then my mother.

    “Thank you, Mom.”

“Good night, Christina… I mean Tina,” she corrected herself.

    “Good night Mom, Daddy.”

“Call me Josie,” Bette repeated to me when I entered my old room.

    I smiled.

“You talked to your mother, I see.”

“More like I screamed and she listened,” I smiled.

    “Whatever you did… thank you.”

“I did it more for me than you, Bette.”

“I know. That’s why I thank you. Now you can relax and enjoy this trip.”

I watched as Bette undressed Evan.
