You Only Live Once – Why Not Enjoy It – (Chapter: 15 – Igniting a Tradition)
“There we go. All done.” Kasey stood and wiped her hands on a rag. Ashley leaned back and began playing with the buttons on the IPod. Madonna’s Like a Virgin echoed throughout the boat and reverberated across the lake.
Aiden buried his face into his sweatshirt with embarrassment. “Like a virgin huh Aid? I never would have guessed that you were a Madonna fan.” Ashley laughed immediately ceasing when Spencer spotted her. She remembered that she had once told the blonde about her love for the Spice Girls. The last thing she wanted to do was have Spencer divulge such an embarrassing fact.
She quickly pressed the next button and on came a song by Tupac. “Geez Aiden, from one extreme to the other.” Again she skipped the song.
“Much better.” The brunette smiled, settling back in next to Spencer. Paradise City by Guns N Roses came on.
Just then Spencer sat up straight and inhaled, holding her breath she glared intently at her fishing pole. The tip jiggled up and down, up and down. “Hey… hey guys…look.” She whispered, getting the attention of the other teens.
She gripped her fishing rod and waited a few more seconds until the tip went down. As it did she jolted the rod upward and hoped to have set the hook as Aiden had explained. Everyone kept their focus on the tiny girl who seemed to be fighting with a large fish. The drag could be heard as the fish dove deeper into the lake.
Spencer leaned back reeling furiously, trying to get the beast to surface. Kasey stifled a laugh when she noticed how low the girl’s drag was set. However she didn’t say anything, she wanted Spencer to enjoy the ‘fight’. Again the creature swam under the boat as Spencer began to sweat bullets. She cussed out loud and continued her raging battle.
Aiden stood next to her with the net in hand ready to capture the merciless beast. Spencer’s hand viciously tackled the reel in a circular motion when finally the fish surfaced. It was a small mouth bass that looked to weigh less than a pound; not even worth keeping at that size.
Everyone burst into laughter at seeing the sight of such a small fish giving Spencer such a hard time. The blonde’s face was flushed with both embarrassment and fatigue. She reeled in one final time, the fish flopping gingerly into the boat. Kasey quickly picked it up and unhooked it. “Spence, you robbed the cradle.” The brunette extended the fish in her direction.
