“Is everything ok?” The older woman asked after a brief period of silence.

“Um, yeah. I’m just kind of surprised that you’re ok about…”

“You and Ashley, who I’m assuming is the girl waiting for you?” she answered.

“Yes.”

“Well, in all honesty, I couldn’t care less whether two women or two men are in love with each other. It’s none of my business so long as the relationship is a respectful, loving, and nurturing one.”

“I wish my mother would make as much sense as you do.”

The statement earned a good natured smile from the doctor. “Well, everyone has their own views, but I would like to talk about your relationship with your mother. I have a feeling it’s fairly tense.”

Spencer gave a mirthless chuckle. “You could say that.” If anything, her interaction with her mother was akin to walking through a field of land mines. All she wanted to do was continue down the road as smoothly as possible but because of path that choose her, she had to walk with caution. Every inch forward was one closer to a fallout of catastrophic proportions. Now, it seems she had taken that leap and landed right on one of those explosives. “She basically just won’t accept that I am who I am and that I’m not going to change to fit her picture perfect daughter criteria.”

“I’m assuming you two had a fight?”

“More like a mini world war three in the car.” She shook her head in exasperation. For the past few weeks, there wasn’t a reprieve where she could catch her breath and asses the situation between her and her mother properly, it was always one thing after another. On top of all that, she had mostly been keeping her emotions about the situation between them bottled up, like a bottle of vinegar and baking soda that would be shook violently but never opened. They couldn’t talk like civilized human beings with each other, they could barely stand to be in the same room, and it was obvious to the blonde that they both hated who the other had become. “I can’t talk to her. She’s always demanding that I just sit down and take whatever she has to say to me like she knows everything and that what she says is always right. It’s like she thinks I’m 5 and don’t know any better! Then there’s Ashley who’s been the best thing to ever happen to me and all she sees is a spoiled, rebellious, and dysfunctional teenager when she’s none of those things. My mother walks around like she’s some fucking saint when she’s screwing this doctor behind my dad’s back and then has the nerve to say that me falling in love with a girl is a sin. She’s bigoted, judgmental, a hypocrite, and I fuckin hate her…”
