Why Superman Could Never Find a Phone Book – (Chapter: 20: Es-ki-mo)

Spencer didn’t move an inch. Her eyes remained soft in demeanor, non-threatening, yet not too weak. She knew the drill.

“Just talking, dad. Spencer’s mom is cleaning the house, so we thought we would just sit in the sun until she was done…I finished the kitchen and I took the trash out.”

His eyes bounced from Ashley to Spencer, seeking signs of insubordination and fear. His fingers played with his chest hair, gently yanking tiny, individual hairs, the pain welcomed during this routine interrogation.

The cast was partially covered by Ash’s shirt, yet each member of the party acknowledged and recognized the significance of its presence. It was a reminder of something no one wanted to voice. Not at that moment. It would be the elephant in the living room, a dirty little secret shoved under the rug, bits and pieces poking out from underneath, an almost laughable attempt at secrecy.

Minutes seem to tick by, no one wanting to move, as if the slightest shift would rock the boat, sending one of them careening overboard.

Suddenly, as if satisfied by the girl’s reactions, Ashley’s father smiled widely and began to walk backwards across the lawn.

“You two enjoy the afternoon…Ashley, your mother won’t be home until late, so I’m gonna need you to help me with dinner in a few hours.”

“Yes, sir. I’ll be coming in soon.”

Both girls watched him head back to the house, stopping momentarily to retrieve something from the lawn, throwing it to the side into the corner of the lawn.

Ash let out a breath, now aware of Spencer’s hand resting inside hers, partially covered by Ash’s shirt.

Ash closed her eyes; waves of humiliation, shame, and anger flowing over her that Spencer bear witness to her bastard father. It was not a secret that this was Ashley’s life, but having Spencer involved with any of it made her sick; sick for herself and sick for Spencer.

After a few moments past, Ashley masked a smile, and looked over at Spencer, squeezing her hand.

“Um, okay, so I’m gonna close my eyes and you are gonna draw something totally amazing on my arm, right? I really like Van Gogh, but I have feeling what you’re gonna draw will be more Salvador Dali.”

    1. GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT! there is really nothing more I can say. I love your work/writting more and more everyday. I do like the flashback/ this way we know how Spencer and Ashley got to the point that there at now. love it! o by the way this is me begging. lol . Please post more Please

    2. That was the most intimate, loving, sad, thing ever. Poor Ashley…this chapter actually made me kind of angry only because Spencer claims that if she could she would stand next to Ashley and fight forever. But sometime later when Ashely runs over a bird while biking with Madison and Spencer…Spencer just leaves Ashley, telling her things are going to chanage and basically I don’t want to be your friend anymore. So it just killed me to here Spencer say that right now, knowing her action later are different.

    5. I really, really loved the parallel of the tree in this chapter. First of all, the lemon tree being over “the shed” where they kissed was awesome. Then there’s the whole Ashley climbing the tree trying to a) make a gift for her mom and b) reaching the best lemon she can see only to get pulled down to the ground by her Dad. It’s like she was stopped from reaching something good (with the best intentions) and put back on the ground to rot with the other fallen fruit. Her Dad yanking his chest hairs and enjoying that pain while he watched the girl’s response was really hard to read I’m not quite sure what emotion I felt with that, but it was really hard for me to read. The lemon falling during that conversation was perfect especially the part where no one acknowledged it falling, but the all knew it had just like Ash. I LOVED the Viking drawing that was one of the most intimate and sweet scenes I’ve read about the girls. Finally, there’s Spencer’s admission that she wants to kiss Ashley and another lemon falls to rot with the others. It just makes sense with everything that happened later. I could be completely off base, please let me know if I am!
